A. Barryi received first degree burns on her back, arms and face Friday evening when grease spilled on her stove caught fire. Firemen said Mrs. Barrys made an all-too-common mistake when she poured water on the blazing grease. Instead of extinguishing the flames, the water turned to steam and caused the burning grease to splash onto her kitchen walls and floor. Minor Damage She was treated as an out patient at the Eugene Hospital, and damage to her apartment, No. 52 Airport Homes, was con fined to blistering of the paint and loss of curtains in the kit chen. Fire Marshal Lester Barker commented after the tire that especially during the canning season when paraffin fires are common and at all times when deep-fat or grease Is used in cooking housewives should take care to have a lid handy with which fires can be smothered in cooking utensils. Paraffin can be safely handled, he said, if a double boiler is used. Spilled grease or paraffin, Barker added, should be smother ed with baking soda or salt. At 10:53 a.m. Friday a crew went to Thirteenth and Mill to extinguish a car fire started by shorted wiring; at 2:16 p.m. fire men stood by a rubbish fire at 3:12 p.m. another rubbish tire was kept in control at 590 29th Ave. W. The final Friday fire came at 9:56 p.m. when paraffin caught fire on a stove at the Tiny Tav ern, 394 Blair. Firemen report ed that this blaze did slight prop erty damage. Grass Fires Saturday's list included two grass fires. At 11:16 a.m. the fire was controlled at 2739 Portland, and at 1:04 p.m. the second was reported from the 2000 block on Seventh Ave. W. Firemen were kept busy 35 minutes in quelling the second blaze. A flue fire also was reported Saturday at 2:32 p.m. This alarm came from 511 Lawrence St. Posthumous Bronze Star Awarded Captain Childers A posthumously awarded Bronze Star belonging to Capt. Donald T. Childers, son of Mrs. Velma Childers and the late Dr. S. Earl Childers, was awarded the captain's brother Maj. Earl G. Childers last week at Camp Campbell, Ky. Capt. Childers was captured by the Japanese in the Philippine Islands and served through the "Bataan Death March" before his death on a Japanese prison ship which was sunk in the China Sea in October 1944 U.O. Graduate A graduate of the University of Oregon, Capt. Childers entered have to be widened to 80 feet on the basis of action taken at the last session of the state legisla ture requiring county roads to be a minimum of 50 feet wide. Morse added that oiling of county roads is progressing satis factorily. He said the re-surfacing of the Elmira road north to Bethel Drive has just been com pleted and the road crews are now working on the Coburg road. the Army in July 1940, and sailed for the Philippines in March 1941. He commanded a company of Philipine Scouts until he was cap tured in the Bataan campaign. The Bronze Star award, which was presented by Maj. Gen. P. W Clarkson, commanding general of Camp Campbell, was in recogni-, tion of Capt. Childers' work as a substitute medical officer in the Cabanatuan prison camp where he collected all available drugs and set up an emergency hos pital. Camp Shows There was no regular medical officer in the camp. In addition to this, the citation recalled. Captain Childers took part in many camp shows, and was in strumental in keeping the morale of the camp at a high level. The citation also spoke of "his initiative, inspiring courage and devotion to his fellow prisoners." Maj. Earl Childers, to whom the medal was presented, is veteran of the New Guinea and Philippine campaigns. He is now an ROTC instructor at the Unl versity of Indiana, Bloomington, Ind. The American Dialect Society; has appointed Assistant Profes- son Randall V. Mills as director for the state. He will collect and study the provincialisms and pro- i verbial statements that roll off the ; average Oregonian's tongue every day. Mills will be taking part in a national study. The objective is the publication of a dictionary of j American speech. University Scientists At Oak Ridge Meet j Two University of Oregon! scientists, two from the medical school in Portland and one who will be on the staff of the uni versity this fall are among the eight from the state to attend the four-week course in the tech niques of radioisotopes in research beginning in Oak Ridge, Term., Monday, Aug. 2.
