High Schools' s Initial Concert Finds Competent Musicians Family Loses All Belongings SANTA CLARA Neighbors are getting organired to help the vic tims of one of the worst home fire disasters vr to strike the Santa Clara district. Sunday about 8 a. m., Mr. and Mrs. Earl Felton were forced out of their home by a fire that sprang from the wood stove and demolish ed the small frame house in a few minutes. Their pump was frozen and they were unable to do anything, even to save anything, even their snoes. Mr. and Mrs. Felton were dress ed for the day, but the children, Loretta 15, Earlean, 13, Junior Melvin, 11, and Gladys Marie, 9, vere in their night clothes. Another daughter, Juanita, 18, had already gone to work at her job at the Sacred Heart Hospital. worst casualty of the fire was Felton, whose unprotected feet were badly frostbitten during the fight to save the home. He mav have to have two toes amputated. He is a carrier driver for the Golden Fir Lumber Co.. near El- mira Junction. Until the fixe, Mrs. Felton was employed at the Pen ney'S Store Cafeteria. But she has stayed at home since to care for the children. Rev. Floyd Hughes of the Santa Clara Church took the family By BARBARA HEARTFIELD The first concert of the Spring field Union High School's new orchestra, presented Monday eve ning at the school, justified in no uncertain terms the belief of its founders that a high school can and should maintain a symphony orchestra. The program, arranged by F. T. Ellefson, director, and Mary E. Coleman, assistant director, was varied and well-built, with selec tions of contrasting mood and col or by old and modern composers. Climax of the concert was a se lection from Johnson's "The Piper of Hamlin," exciting, descriptive music played wth finesse by the orchestra. Judy Ellefson, as solo itain Receives Uranium Stores CAPETOWN, (U.R) South Africa's potentially huge uranium deposits, discovery df which was announced enly last week, will be turned over to Britain exclusive ly under arrangements now be ing prepared by the government: a reliable source said Tuesday. The uranium deposits have been found at the Witwatersrand gold mines and present indications are that South Africa may be one of the world's biggest atomic power fuel dumps. South Africa already is working the mines, this source said, and small quantities of the Witwaters rand deposits have been extracted. The work, however, is still in the experimental stage. 1 A complete security blackout was clamped around all informa tion on the deposits shortly after the Hiroshima and Nagasaki blasts, but some reports say there are huge deposits all the way from Witwatersrand to the Bel gian Congo. Couple Sues After Dispute A $2,825 damage suit was filed in circuit court Tuesday .by Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Wills against R. E. McCrady, elleging that Mc Crady sold them a trailer house, but later tried to play Indian giver. McCrady, they allege, sold them the trailer house for $1,700. but a few months later came back, al legedly chased them away from the trailer, and put a padlock on the door. tn addition to the price of the trailer, they are asking $250 dam ages for $25 a week rent in an other place, after they were lock ed out. The couple are also asking for $1000 "exemplary and puni tive damages." YOUR WASH DRIED EASY WAY We pick up, dry, deliver. Eug. Clothes Drying Serv., Ph. 6634-W. Steam Boats Continue Race GREENVILLE, Miss. UP) With emergency repairs made, the diesel towboat Helena nosed back into the Mississippi River early Tuesday morning and began chug ging to overcome the 100 mile lead held by her steam-powered rival, the Kokoda, tn their historic race up the stream. The two towboats are in the fifth day of their Mississippi River home after church service, and when other neighbors called to assist, they found that relatives had already responded, and the family are now housed in a trailer house in the Santa Clara district. A neighbor' meeting was called for Tuesday afternoon, when San ta Clara people were to decide on dates for a benefit shower. Chief need of the family is for clothing. The house which was a total loss, was owned by Mr. and Mrs. Harden of River Road. Outstanding also were the solo clarinet passages, performed by Ray Moore, in the Kcler Bela over ture, and the vivid color contrasts in orchestra tone in Brahms' "The Little Sandman." The orchestra proved its worth on music from the standard con cert repertoire by accompanying Mary E. Coleman, violin soloist, in the Andante movement from Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto, Op. 64. . A feature of the program was the group played by the string or chestra, directed by Miss Cole man. Instruction in string instru ments has been given for only a year and a half in. the Springfield public schools: students and teach er have already made great pro gress. Their performance of Gounod's "Angelus" held togeth er very well; Fischel's "Danse a 1'Antique" revealed some especi ally fine violin playing. Strauss "Pizzicato Polka," de lightfully clowned by director Ellefson and the entire orchestra, concluded the program on a merry note. The orchestra's playing is, of course, far from perfect in many respects. They are a fairly well- balanced group of forty instru ments, but covQd use certain other parts to advantage. Many of the players need more experience. But that is not important. They are playing fine music, under fine leadership, and playing with en- thusiasm. They play well enough so that they and an audience can enjoy the music. They should be proud of their progress to date.
