Navy has adopted a gadget to take the hazard out of forced landings at sea. The gadget, known as a "nydro flap," is a planing surface swung beneath the fuselage as a water ski when a pilot ii forced to set his plane down in the ocean. The hydro-flap keeps the nose of the plans skimming along the surface until most forward speed is lost. After the plane's gradual deceleration, personnel use escape hatches and 'launch survival gear in the few minutei before the plane sink!. The Navy said most casualties during forced lands at seat result from structural failure and "sub marining'" which results when the plane's nose digs into the water. The hydro-flap, developed by tho national advisory committee for aeronautics, will be Installed on the production models of the Martin P4M Mercator. In addi tion, studies are now being made to determine the type of flap best suited for the Lockheed P2V Nep tune. Both are long-range patrol planes. The newly-developed hydro- flap, though able to withstand loads up to 10,000 pounds, adds only 11 pounds to the weight of the plane. i W v MmfWl iTlf iS Norihwt Quarter of th Northwt Quarter at Seollon 31. It was one of the largest cats seen around hert in a long time, nine leet long and was one of the dark brindle var iety, an old one, fat, and in fine condition. It took the dogs quite a while to tree him "and Roy said his little twenty-two rifle did the rest. Now they are after a big bear that is in the same vicinity. The remodeling of The Poplars restaurant is almost completed and they expect to open this week, giving Drain a modern eat ing place comparable to the finest found on our highways. Mrs. Hlchethelr and her nephew will be in charge. The old service sta tion, in the front is being torn down and new island and pumps have been put in beside the res taurant. Mr. and Mrs. Claud Ritter ex pect to open their grocery and meat market ln a few days. The new building of cement construc tion also houses cold storage lock ers that have been in operation for two weeks. All these new buildings and new business ventures are heal thy signs for Drain's future. Mr. and Mrs. Corner McFad den have built and are now oper ating a grocery In east Drain. They are serving hamburgers and short orders.' Being near the schools, they are kept busy filling a long felt want for this service. Mr. and Mrs. Spurgeon have re ceived word that a son-in-law in Missouri, has been operated on for brain tumor but is progressing as well as could be expected.
