High water flooded streets in the St. Johns Woods project in North Port land and Altamead in East Port land. Johnson Creek went out of its banks and surrounded a house In Southeast Portland. Canyon Road leading west out of Portland to Hillsboro was covered with debris from slides as were numerous other street in the area. Nearg Scottsburg in Douglas County a landslide caught a truck and trailer. Another truck bumped into it. Both vehicles were badly damaged but the drivers were unhurt. Water poured In cascades over the fashionable West Side hills in Portland. A 30-foot, stretch of Fairmount Boulevard was washed out. Weakened earth fell over the Council Crest streetcar tracks. Slides and washouts closed many nearby roads. Coos Bay area sawmills were nearly all shut down because of breaks and diversion of power to Roseburg where the city was without electricity for a time Tuesday. Roseburg was again without power Wednesday. Completely cut off were the towns of Dorena, Disston, Culp creek and engineers said roads between Cottage Grove, Silk Creek and Lorane were sev ered. The Eugene-Jasper-Fall Creek road was also reported underwater. Highway engineers said there was 22 inches of water over the Coos Bay-Roseburg Highway 10 miles west of Dillard. Army engineers gave farm ers in the middle valley a 24 hour notice to remove livestock from low levels near Salem, Corvallis and Albany. but nearing the top of protec tive banks. State Highway 20 was under two feet of water in places nprth of Sweet Home. The inundation was attributed to run off from the hills. At Lebanon, the Santiam was reported within recently com pleted revetments at :00 p. m. The Oregon State Motor As sociation advised southbound motorists to travel either the Coast Highway 101 or The Dalles-California route on the east side of the Cascades. The Union Pacific Railroad announced a landslide in the Columbia stiver Gorge has sev ered Its mainline route to the east from Portland. The road has rerouted its daily streamliners' over the Spo kane, Portland and Seattle lines on the Washington side of the Columbia. Trains will operate six to eight hours behind schedule lying areas. Local creeks were veritable rivers flooding hundreds of base ments in Salem. Sewers were clogged so that many roads' looked like lakes. Some bridge washouts were reported in the city. ' ' ' Several families were evacu ated Wednesday from the Jef ferson and Buena Vista areas south of Salem as the Willam ette River spilled over into low- Rescue party from - Grants Pass was sent to assist families In the Murphy area, nine miles from the city, where several families were marooned by flood swollen river waters.
