He later reduced it to writing, and translated the Bible into it. When he retired from his mis sionary career he left a civilized tribe with schools, churches, and commerce. HIGH 12th and JoHorson Euqene, Ore THE APOSTLE PAUL ' SAID: "Now these things, brethren, I have In a figure transferred to myself and Apollos lor your' sakes; that in us ye might learn not to go beyond the things which are written; that no one of you be puffed up for the one against the other" (1 Cor. 4:6). The principle back of this statement is one of the most needed ideas in the field of re ligion in our era. Many re ligious bodies teach that we are free to do anything in our wor ship and service to God that is not expressly forbidden in the word of God. For example, the use of instrumental music in the worship of God is not for bidden in so many words in the New Testament. Thus people have the idea that it is author ized. They over look the fact that God has commanded of us what He wanted us to do. The "things that are written" con tain His will to us. We are com manded to sing (Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16; 1 Cor. 14:15). Nowhere are we .commanded to play an Instrument. The fact that we are com manded to sing and no com mand Is given for us to play In dicates exactly what we should do. The "things that are writ ten" say sing. One who adds playing an instrument goes be yond what Is written. He Is guilty of doing what Paul teaches we ought not to do. The Bible or the word of God is both inclusive and exclusive. That which it authorises by a "Thus salth the Lord" is in cluded. All else is excluded be cause it is not included. When Jesus instituted the Lord's Sup per, he commanded bread and the cup or fruit of the vine as its elements. Everything else Is thus excluded. This shows that the word of God is sufficient. It furnishes us "completely unto every good work" (2 Tim. 3:17). Whoever goes beyond that word to add that which God did not com mand Is guilty of heresy (2 Jno. S). (2 Tim. 2:15) People who are still striving to cling to the old Moiaical law in this dispensation have not yet learned the proper relation between the Old Testament and the New Testament. "Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are Justified by the law (law of Moses); ye are fallen from grace." (Gal. 5:4). We must learn that God's law in the Old Testament was "added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to them to whom the promise was made. . ." (Gal. 3:19). But Christ has broken down this middle wall (law of commandments) ot partition between Jew and Gentfle, nailing it to his cross, that he might reconcile both (Jew and Gentile) unto God in one body. (Eph. 2:14; Col. 2:14). So the old law given at Mt. Sinai was done away In Christ, that a new covenant might be given to the world. Paul said the old law became dead, under which the Jews were held un til Christ, and that they were delivered from It, that they should serve In newness of spirit, and not in the oldness ot the letter. This was the law containing the 10 commandments. See Rom. 7:7 where he tells which law It was the law which said, "Thou Shalt not covet." This was the 10th commandment written on stone.
