(RA, Wuest, president of the West Coast Plywood Co., Friday "unveiled" a new, Improved-surface plywood known as "Welchboard," for A. R. Welch, vice president of the firm who invented and improved the product, The new panel production is on a limited scale but will reacu vol ume production in six monh. Plywood manufacturers will be li censed to make the new product through the Plywood Research Foundation of Tacoma, nonprofit organization set up by the indus try two years ago to eliminate waste and develop new products. ine new process utilizes waste plywood aggregates, in the form of wood flour, bonded with resins to a plywood base. The same hot plate presses used In making ply- wooa are used to bond the new surface material to nlvwood ran- els. The surface was described as relatively, hard and smoother than any present plywood surfaces and has the natural color of the pul verized wood fibers used light tan in we case ol Douglas fir. it nas no Kraln and no natiemn. because of the minuteness of the wood fibers bonded together and to the plywood bases. So far, only clean wastes from plywood manufacture have been used but the probability is seen of obtaining sawdust from saw mills, furniture factories and sim ilar sources and grinding it into "discrete" mater:al for the "Welchboard" raw material. It has already attracted atten tion in the industry for interior and exterior construction, refrig erators, counter tops and fine cab inet work. Another Housing Story: 11 Beds in 4 Rooms SAN FRANCISCO (U.fi) So the housing shortage has made things tough for youl. In a San Francisco housing project tonight, 11 members of two families, the children ranging from one month to teen-agers, are crammed into a four-room dwell tag. Mattresses were scattered like life rafts around the iloors of Mrs. Carman Kellman's apartment. Her three children had beds. She had a bed. But her brother and sister-in lawv Mr. and Mrs. Donald Kell man, and their five children had only mattresses. The Kellmans were forced to vacate their five-room apartment when the building was sold and the new landlord demanded occupancy. Platinum was originally discov ered in South America.
