Local Elks Observe 50th Anniversary More than 2000 members of Elks Lodges from all over Oregon came to Eugene Saturday night to assist the local lodge in its Golden Anniversary celebration. Main speaker was Robert S. Farrell, Jr., secretary of state and member of the lodge. He gave an instructive talk on the trend of current events, the responsibilities of the lodge, and place of the lodge in the community, pointing out that all members must be ever alert for subversive elements. Farrell outlined the history of the Elks Lodge in America, and pointed out that it attracts a wide variety of members, In both skill ed and unskilled occupations. Master of ceremonies was Gerry Gaylord, of Eugene, who Introduced charter members of the local group. Judge L. T. Har ris, charter member, gave a short talk on the charter membership and the beginnings of the Eugene lodge. A parade through downtown Eugene was held Sunday after noon by members and visitors who remained in town. The Portland Elks band led the pa rade. The forthcoming Beaux Arts ball, an nually sponsored by the Palet teers, will use the Arabian Nights theme this year, and will be pre sented Feb. 22. Plans for a party were discussed at a meeting of the Home Econ omics Club Jan. 8. Joan Mannel, president, said the club's first so cial function will be Feb. 3. The clubroom has been redecorated by students of Homemaking II classes. This room is to be used as a lounge for the homemaking students. Starting Jan. 8, senior pictures will be taken by Kennell -Ellis for the 1947 Annual. The reauire- ments for the boys are suits and ties while the girls may wear sweaters and blouses. The a cappella choir and the SHS band under the direction of Glenn Griffith and Byron Miller, respectively, will furnish music at the Odd Fellows grand installa tion at McArthur Court Jan. 14. One of several numbers to be pre sented by the band is the brilliant "Arabian Nights Overture." The choir will sing the "Pilgrims Chorus" by Richard Wagner and "Lost in the Night" with the solo sung by Rose Young. The choir and the band will join in the pre sentation of O'Hara's "One World."
