Kiley, 29, Eugene, .was arrested Wednesday at 9:19 p. m. by state police on Highway 99 South, and charged with grand larceny of an auto, possession of a lirearm with the number filed off, and carrying a concealed weapon. He wai lodged in the county Jail. Kiley was alleged to have stol en an auto registered to Harry Thorn, Osburn Hotel, at about 8 p. m. Wednesday. DICKSON'S-MEAT DEPT. Capone Syndicate Said Aiding College Football Bet Rackets CHICAGO (U.R Members of a gambling syndicate which ot its start in the hey-day of Al Capone are pocketing fat profits from widespread gambling on college football games, a Chicago anti-crime leader reported Thurs day. Virgil Peterson, secretary of the Chicago Crime Commission, charged that betting on football 'parlay cards," spreading among college and university students during the current season, was a "vicious racket" definitely in the hands of the old Capone syndi cate. Committee Mulls As Peterson's charges were made, the University of Illinois Disciplinary Committee at Cham paign was considering the an swers given by three students to questioning on their part in dis tributing the cards on the campus. Authorities here said it was known that students on gome campuses act as agents for dis tributing the cards. Peterson Attends Convention Mrs. E. H. Peterson, Eugene, is attending a national Bed Cross meeting in Washington, D.C. The meeting opened Tuesday and is scheduled to end Thursday. One of 100 delegates represent ing the nation's 1,500,000 volun teer Red Cross workers, Mrs. Pet erson represents the Lane County chapter. She is chairman of the chapter's volunteer services sec tion. Mrs. Harry Truman presided at the meeting and delegates at tended a White House reception Tuesday. Basil O'Conner, national Red Cross chairman, spoke at a convention dinner Wednesday. x-Prisoner of Japs o Speak at Church O. J. Goulter, missionary to China and former prisoner of the Japanese, will speak at a Chris tian Church covered dish dinner Friday at 12:80 p. m. Church members from Junction City, McKcnzie Bridge, Spring field and other county communi ties have been invited. Mrs. Opal Carson, president of the state of ficers, will be a guest. Cover dough In bowl and let rise in a warm place until light and double in bulk, about 1 hour. With a spoon or spatula, divide dough evenly between 2 greased 8-inch round layer cake pans.
