Eugene Man Arrested
On Auto, Gun Charge
Albert A. Kiley, 29, Eugene,
.was arrested Wednesday at 9:19
p. m. by state police on Highway
99 South, and charged with grand
larceny of an auto, possession of
a lirearm with the number filed
off, and carrying a concealed
weapon. He wai lodged in the
county Jail.
Kiley was alleged to have stol
en an auto registered to Harry
Thorn, Osburn Hotel, at about 8
p. m. Wednesday.

College Football Bet Rackets

college football games, a Chicago
anti-crime leader reported Thurs
day.
Virgil Peterson, secretary of
the Chicago Crime Commission,
charged that betting on football
'parlay cards," spreading among
college and university students
during the current season, was a
"vicious racket" definitely in the
hands of the old Capone syndi

As Peterson's charges were
made, the University of Illinois
Disciplinary Committee at Cham
paign was considering the an
swers given by three students to
questioning on their part in dis
tributing the cards on the campus.
Authorities here said it was
known that students on gome
campuses act as agents for dis
tributing the cards. They said that
some could make as high as $100
or $190 a week on their 25 per
cent of the "take" on the cards.

attending a national Bed Cross
meeting in Washington, D.C. The
meeting opened Tuesday and is
scheduled to end Thursday.

teer Red Cross workers, Mrs. Pet
erson represents the Lane County
chapter. She is chairman of the
chapter's volunteer services sec
tion.

at the meeting and delegates at

Tuesday. Basil O'Conner, national
Red Cross chairman, spoke at a
convention dinner Wednesday.

Cover dough In bowl and let rise in a warm place until light
and double in bulk, about 1 hour. With a spoon or spatula,
divide dough evenly between 2 greased 8-inch round layer cake
pans. Then with floured fingers, pat out dough to fit pang.
' Mark each cake into 8 pie-shaped pieces by cutting through
dough with a sharp knife. Cover pans with a damp cloth and
let rise in a warm place until dough is double in bulk, 30-35
minutes. Brush top surfaces with melted butter or shortening
and bake in a hot oven, 400, for 15-20 minutes. Remove from
oven and while still warm spread each cake with a thin icing
made by mixing together
