Alder St. The council also approved a planning commission recommendation that property at Thirteenth Ave. E. and Columbia St. be rezoned from business to single family residence. Mulkey, 1471 Jefferson St., from single family to multiple dwelling; and Ted E. and Clara Law, Thirteenth laoists Burn Two Leaders PEIPING W Chines po lice reported Wednesday that 36 priests in the famous Taoist temple Paiyunkuan (White Cloud) revolted Tuesday and burned to death the temple's abbott and its Taoist layman on a huge bonfire. The police related this story: The priests accused the two men of violating Taoist regu lations. They smashed into the men's living quarters and dragged them out to the temple gate. The priests beat the two men with clubs, trussed them with ropes, flung them on a pile of firewood, doused them with gasoline and fired the bier. Police found the totally charred bodies more than an hour later. Twenty-seven of the priests surrendered and the other nine were turned over to police. Police said the priests re ported they cremated the abbot and layman because of a decade old dispute over temple property. Eugene Wafer Offer Reported SPRINGFIELD A special mayor's committee appointed to study the possibility of obtaining water, from Eugene's filtration plant at Hayden Bridge reported to the council Tuesday nignt mat the Eugene Water Board had "ex pressed its willingness to distrib ute water to the people of spring field." The Eugene line, on which sur veys recently were completed, is to be laid immediately north of Springfield- from the filtration plant. Capacity Given Ray Boals, superintendent of the Eugene Water Board, said Wednesday morning the filtration plant was designed to produce 75.000.000 callons of water daily. The initial capacity of the plant will be about 25,000,000, Boals said. ' The committee suuested four methods by which th city could obtain the water: 1. Purchase water from Eugene and resell it to Mountain States Power Co., which now has dis tribution facilities. 2. Purchase water for city dis tribution and buy Mountain States facilities. Form District 8. Have the immediate Spring field area form a water district and purchase existing facilities. 4. Join with Eugene In a met ropolitan water district to include the enure springneia augene area. The committee said the latter would be of the greatest benefit to the greatest number ot persons in the area. Water committee members are: W. S. Fort, H. E. Maxey, Frank Bouck, and Dr. W. N. Dow. Susan Oliver Susan Oliver, 69, Springfield, died at a Eugene hospital Tues day. A lifelong resident of Ore gon, she was born Feb. 10, 1877, at Cottage Grove, and was mar ried there to John M. Oliver Dec. 25, 1901. She lived In Springfield the last 23 years. Surviving are her widower, John; two sisters, Hattie Trent, Cottage Grove, and Rosie Martin, Cottage Grove; four brothers. j o n n Alien, uarabaldl. Ore., James. North Bend. Don. Eugene. and Robert, Roseburg; and several nephews and nieces including tsoDDie Allen, who has been mak ing his home with Mrs. Oliver.
