laoists Burn
Two Leaders
PEIPING W Chines po
lice reported Wednesday that
36 priests in the famous Taoist
temple Paiyunkuan (White
Cloud) revolted Tuesday and
burned to death the temple's
abbott and its Taoist layman on
a huge bonfire.
The police related this story:
The priests accused the two
men of violating Taoist regu
lations. They smashed into the
men's living quarters and dragged
them out to the temple gate.
The priests beat the two men
with clubs, trussed them with
ropes, flung them on a pile of
firewood, doused them with
gasoline and fired the bier.
Police found the totally
charred bodies more than an
hour later.
Twenty-seven of the priests
surrendered and the other nine
were turned over to police.
Police said the priests re
ported they cremated the abbot
and layman because of a decade
old dispute over temple property.

Offer Reported
SPRINGFIELD A special
mayor's committee appointed to
study the possibility of obtaining
water, from Eugene's filtration
plant at Hayden Bridge reported
to the council Tuesday nignt mat
the Eugene Water Board had "ex
pressed its willingness to distrib
ute water to the people of spring
field." The Eugene line, on which sur
veys recently were completed, is
to be laid immediately north of
Springfield- from the filtration
plant.
Capacity Given
Ray Boals, superintendent of
the Eugene Water Board, said
Wednesday morning the filtration
plant was designed to produce
75.000.000 callons of water daily.
The initial capacity of the plant
will be about 25,000,000, Boals
said. '
The committee suuested four
methods by which th city could
obtain the water:
1. Purchase water from Eugene
and resell it to Mountain States
Power Co., which now has dis
tribution facilities.
2. Purchase water for city dis
tribution and buy Mountain States
facilities.
Form District
8. Have the immediate Spring
field area form a water district
and purchase existing facilities.
4. Join with Eugene In a met
ropolitan water district to include
the enure springneia augene
area.
The committee said the latter
would be of the greatest benefit
to the greatest number ot persons
in the area. Water committee
members are: W. S. Fort, H. E.
