Eugene, Ore,, Vd- Aug. 81. 194 Year's Gains Told in Japan TOKYO U.B George Atche on, Jr., United States member of the Control Council for Japan, told the Japanese people Wednes day that against the dark back ground of pessimism foreign and Japanese a : -nr ago, the progress gained in Japan stands out in "startling silhouette." He gave credit to Gen. Douglas MacArthur for "wisdom and tol erance far-sighted leadership" in administering the occupation in a statement issued for the Japan ese public. Atcheson said the majority of Japanese people had "spurned the importunities of self-seeking mi norities." He observed that in the last year the Japanese "have re nounced the totalitarian leaders who opposed and misled them into disasterous aggression." Registration of visitors at the same time in the last pre-war travel year of 1941 exceeds that of this year by 58,428 or 29.9 per cent. The park was open throughout the travel year of 1941 and 61,839 people had registered by June 15, the date the park was open to the public this year. (n Peti tions to unseat Senator Bilbo (D Miss), to "outlaw the Ku Klux1 Klan in the United States" and to pass a federal anli-lynching law have been signed by several hun dred physicians attending the con vention of the National Negro Medical Assn. here. The petitions were circulated at ths convention session Tuesday by Edgar G. Brown of Washington, director of the National Negro Council. He said they already had been signed by 400,000 persons all over the country. One of the petitions, criticizing Bilbo's recent radio broadcast in which he urged "redblooded Anglo-Saxons in Mississippi to resort to any means to keep all Negroes from voting in the primary elec tion," asks that the U. S. Senate deny a seat to Bilbo for "dis orderly behavior."
