Year's Gains
Told in Japan
TOKYO U.B George Atche
on, Jr., United States member of
the Control Council for Japan,
told the Japanese people Wednes
day that against the dark back
ground of pessimism foreign and
Japanese a : -nr ago, the progress
gained in Japan stands out in
"startling silhouette."
He gave credit to Gen. Douglas
MacArthur for "wisdom and tol
erance far-sighted leadership" in
administering the occupation in a
statement issued for the Japan
ese public.
Atcheson said the majority of
Japanese people had "spurned the
importunities of self-seeking mi
norities." He observed that in the
last year the Japanese "have re
nounced the totalitarian leaders
who opposed and misled them into
disasterous aggression."
Swiss cheese was brought into
America by Swiss immigrants in
1830.

From now until school starts again is the peak of the summer travel
season. Most of our trains are heavUy loaded, and reservations at your
favorite resort are frequently difficult to get.
But if you can arrange to take your vacation after Labor Day in
September or in October or November, chances are you'll be able to
get exactly the accommodations you want not only on the train,
but at your destination as well.
In California, weather is at its best in the fall. San Francisco, for
example, has its nicest weather in September and October. The same
is true in Southern California.
So we suggest that in planning your well-earned Victory Vacation
this year, it might be well to aim at the Indian Summer off-season.
You'll be less crowded and have lots more fun.
However, if you have to take your vacation sooner, we'll -lo every
thing we can to help you. Just let us know as far in advance as possible.
