But before going into such phases of the plan as adjustments, evictions and compliance, you might be interested In knowing what rent control does and does not cover. In the first place, the OPA pro gram reaches only dwelling rentals. It has nothing to do with rates on commercial properties. aw. Epperson, USNR, has been advanced to the rank of lieutenant senior grade has been received by his wife, Mrs. Geneva Epperson, and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. U. S. Epper son, Crow Stage route. Lieutenant Epperson, who was called up for active duty ln Sep tember, 1942, is chief engineer on a destroyer escort somewhere in the Pacific. He has been at sea 21 months. Note to tenants: The OPA rent office does not: 1. Furnish a list of vacant dwellings or otherwise find you a home. 2. Say whether or not you can have certain privileges such as pets. That's up to your landlord, as always. 3. Protect you from eviction, if you create nuisance, refuse to pay your rent or otherwise play the role of a bad tenant. 4. Force your landlord to furn ish any services or equipment not furnished on the freeze-date of first rental. 5. Act as a court of human rela tions in settling Irrelevant squab bles with your landlord or with other tenants. Note to landlords. The OPA rent office does not: 1. Equalize rents. It rolls them back to the pre-inflatlon levels you yourself set. 2. Control the sale price of your property. 3. Usurp the authority of local courts and law officers in carry ing out evictions. OPA merely au thorizes the eviction. 4. Collect your rent. And an additional not to both: In general, if your problem relates to rental rates, equipment, ser vices and evictions, the OPA rent office steps in. Otherwise, no. Coast Guardsman From Eugene Has Tough Time During Luzon Invasion ABOARD A COAST GUARD MANNED ATTACK TRANS PORT AT LUZON (Special) Coast Guardsman Glen M. Han kins, signalman third class, of 924 West Fifth street, Eugene, and the rest of the coast guard crew of this attack transport are putting the Luzon invasion down In their books as the roughest, toughest action they've ever experienced in Pacific combat operations. "This time they really meant business," said the local coast guardsman and his shipmates. "Thev served us lust about every thing on the Jap menu. They tried to get us with bombers, war- ! ships and submarines. And those little monkey-faces even tried sneaking up in small boats at night and dynamiting anchored ships. But we got there, unload ed our troops and cargo and now we're a big step nearer Tokyo." Signalman Hanklns told of anx ious, nerve-racking days and sleepless nights as a gigantic in vasion fleet threaded its way among Jap-held islands in the central Philippines and steamed up through the Sewth China sea to Llngayen gulf. Eugene Men Receive Army Commissions Erwin LeRoy Snyder and John J. Dayton, Jr., both of Eugene, recently were commissioned sec ond lieutenants in the army upon completion of the officer candi date course at the Infantry school, Ft Benning, Ga. " Lieutenant Dayton, son ot Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Lundberg, was inducted into the army in April, 1944, and served with the 1RTC at Camp Roberts, Calif., before going to officer candidate school. He held the rank of corporal be fore being commissioned, and is a graduate of Santa Clara high school. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur D. Snyder, 694 Tenth Avenue west, Snyder entered the army in Feb ruary, 1943, and served at the in fantry replacement training cen ter. Camp Wheeler, Ga., before going to Ft. Benning four months ago. He was a sergeant. Snyder is a graduate of Sibley high school, Dawson, N. D., and the University of Oregon, where he was a Yeoman, member of Wesley foundation, and an Emer ald reporter. Drain ;Raider' Gets Promotion in China Leonard Arthur Willits AN ADVANCED CHINA AIR BASE Tech. Sgt. Robert A. Crandall, 23, of Drain, recently was promoted from the rank of Staff Sgt. Sergeant Crandall Is an electrical specialist in a Mustang squadron of Randall's Raiders, a 14th air force fighter wing com manded by Brig. Gen. Russell E. Randall. A graduate ot Drain Union high school, the sergeant studied avia tion mechanics at Eugene "Voca tional school before he entered the army in December, 1941. He has been overseas 18 months, four ot which he has spent in China with the Raiders. The remainder of his overseas service was spent at a base in India. Sergeant Crandall is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Earl Cran dall of Drain. Previous to enter ing the army he was employed by the Ball Lumber company. SERGEANT IIIGGINS HERE Staff Sgt. Clarence J. Higgins, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Higgins, 259 Thirteenth Avenue east, has returned to Eugene on a 21 -day furlough after 35 months over seas. He saw service in Australia, New Guinea, and the Netherlands East Indies. Shortly before his trip home. Sergeant HiRRlns' bat talion received a presidential ci tation. At the end of his furlough he will report to Santa Barbara, Calif., for rest and reassignment. JOHNSON NOW CORPORAL Serving with the 12th armored divslon ot the seventh army in France, Wayne B. Johnson, Maple ton, has recently been promoted to the rank of corporal. The di vision left the United States with a high reputation, earned in its training in the Tennessee manue ver area and in Texas. Its official nickname is the "Hellcat" divi sion. THIRD CLUSTER GIVEN Mr. and Mrs. Lot Wagner, Dor cna, have received word that their son, First Lt. Ernest L. Wagner, has received a third oak leaf clus ter to the air medal. The award was given for meritorious achieve nient while participating in aerial flight over France. BADGE TO INFANTRYMAN The combat infantryman's badge for exemplary conduct in action against the enemy at Blak during the Dutch New Guinea campaign has been awarded to Sgt. William A. Callahan, 22, nephew of Ivan C. Raish, Springfield. Sergeant Callahan enlisted ln the national guard from Eugene In September, 1940. The Infantryman's citation was signed by Capt. Edgar W. Martin, personnel officer.' BASIC WORK ENDED Aviation Cadet Wendell Claire Kaufman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert E. Kaufman, 224 Second Avenue east, recently completed his basic flying training at the Merced army air field in, Califor nia. He now will proceed to an army advanced flying school, where he will take the final steps toward attainment of his silver pilot wings. Virtually Meatless . Summer Predicted WASHINGTON.
