Rooks, 27, Dies Here Sunday The death of Ronald B. Rooks occurred Sunday, July 12. Rooks, 27, was born in Decoris township. Minn., Oct. 31. 1914. He grew to manhood in Mancato, Minn., where he was a member of the Chris tian church. Rooks came to Eu gene about four years ago. He is survived by his motner. Mrs. J. CAVEN At the Sacred Heart general hospital on Sunday, after a 25-minute flight, said the huge twin-motored snip was bet ter than anything now in service. Boeing Aircraft company, whose flying fortress army bombers are in service on war fronts through out the world, unveiled the flying boat after a year of secret experi mentation. Engineers said it was capable of hunting out and de stroying enemy submarines and surface vessels far from estab lished bases. The new plane, constructed be hind locked doors, was designated by the navy as XPBB-1 but is called the "Sea Ranger" by Boeing. With a six-man crew aboard, the Sea Ranger rose gracefully and speedily from Lake Wash ington and maneuvered over .Se attle and the Puget Sound during the unheralded first test. Edmund T. Allen, head of the Boeing flight and aerodynamics division, was at the controls. He said he was "well pleased" with the Sea Ranger's performance. "It has marvellous control," he said. "It's a stable ship and its water taxiing characteristics are unusually good. It lands and takes off perfectly." Allen put the giant boat through four short take-off hops prior to the actual test flight. Although as large as a four engined craft, the "Sea Ranger" is powered by two huge Wright Cyclone motors, said to be the most powerful in production. Of all metal construction and tj carry a larger bomb load than any navy plane now in service. There are full living accomoda tions for a ten-man crew.
