Receive Degrees Butron C. Lemmon of Tacoma, Wash, was awarded his Masters degree in education at Oregon State college last week. Mr. Lem mon is a former resident of this community, having taught in the Bellfountain high school and ser ved as athletic coach the year the Bellfountain basketball team won the state championship. Amos Bierly of Coquille, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. George R. Buck ingham of this community re ceived his Bachelors degree in agriculture at O. S. C. last week. Mr. Bierly has recently accepted a position as assistant in the AAA office at Coquille. He and Mrs. Bierly (formerly Miss Loree Buckingham) spent the week-end at the Buckingham home. Miss Helen Quails of Gaston is now employed as bookkeeper in the office of the Ralph Hull mill at Dawson. Miss Quails is a form er resident of the Bellfountain community. The Four-H homemaking club, with Miss Hazel Buckingham as leader, and the sewing club led by Mrs. Opal Likens met at the home of Miss Maxine Smith re cently for their regular meeting. Ira Stratton cut his knee with a saw recently while at work in the Miller logging woods west of Bellfountain. Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Starr and sons are moving this week-end from the Lloyd Malcom house south of Bellfountain to Newport. Mr. Starr is employed at the Toledo mill. Jim Bloor of Monroe, Wash, is visiting this week at the home of his brother, Mr. and Mrs. William Bloor and son. Mr. and Mrs. Bloor plan to take him to Kelso, Wash, on Friday and will visit relatives of Mrs. Bloor over the week-end. $2000 Scholarship To Be Awarded In Soap Box Derby Finals To some young race car nilnf winner of the 1941 All-American Soap Box Derby finals at Akron, Ohio, will go a $2,000 college scholarship to any recognized state college or state university. The winner and runner up of the local event will be taken to Portland to com pete in the Soap Box Derby there on July 26th. If either of the lo cal drivers takes that event he will get a free, ail-expense trip to Akrort, Ohio, to compete in the National finals. Ail entrants in the local race will be given a chrome-plated racing helmet and there will be many prizes given to entrants in the Eugene Soap Box Derby. Eugene entrants must register at the Silva Chevrolet Co, and ob tain the 1S4I rules book, Native Shrubs And Flowers To Be Set Out Along Highway Mrs, Paul J. Cauthorn, Eugene R. F. D. 2, has received word from the state highway commis sion that a landscape gardener will be sent here to eo-operate with her in a plan to plant shrubs and wild flowers along the Sius law highway on the east slope of the low pass. The roadside at the turns in the highway where small streams trickle down the moun tain wilt be given special atten tion, Mrs. Cauthorn said. It is planned to plant seeds of rhododendron, azalea, fox glove, lupine, wild iris, snapdragon, red poppies and other shrubs and flowers native to this section. The guests $ honor will be the three genera tions of scholars attending the Sunday school in the coramuatty. Another feature of the Sasda? school hour will be the combina tion, of the Children's day pro gram and the closing of the vaca tion Bible school which was held from Monday fiil Friday of this week. The school opened Monday morning and closed its work at 11:45 Friday morning.
