The United States ratified this agreement and ruled that the cus toms officers be instructed to re fuse clearance papers on any cof fees shipped over and above the quota of any country, in violation of the agreement. This ruling gave all producing countries con fidence and immediately most countries established minimum selling prices for their various grades. Bidding Spirited The official ratification by the United States government of this quota agreement made coffee buyers in this country realize that no more coffee could be had at the old low level. The coffee quota agreement Is scheduled to remain in effect un til October, 1943, but its present success indicates that the agree ment may become permanent on coffee as well as other commod ities. . . Little Complaint So far most of the burden has fallen on the American coffee rnnstern and nackers. who have been forced to pay higher prices for green coffee long before it was possible to pass this Increased expenditure on to the retail trade. PAPRIKA DEFINED The definition of paprika as re leased by the U. S. department of agriculture says it is the dried, ripe fruit of Capsicum annum L. It contains not more than 8.5 per cent of total ash, nor more than 1 per cent of ash Insoluble in hy drochloric acid. The iodine num ber of its extracted oils Is not less than 125, nor more than 136. It contains not less than 8 per cent of quer citannic acid (calulated from the total oxygen absorbed by the aqueous extract), not more than 25 per cent of crude fiber, not more tnan o per cent oi total asn. nor more than 0.4 per cent of ash Insoluble in hydrochloric acid. 3. Anise, aniseed, is the dried fruit of Pimpinella anisum L. It contains not more than 9 per cent of total ash, nor more than 1.5 per cent of ash Insoluble in hydro chloric ana. KING'S PAPRIKA Koelngspaprika, king's pap rika, Is Hungarian paprika prepar ed by grinding whole pods of pap rika without selection, and in cludes the seeds and steins natur ally occurring with the pods. It contains not more than 18 percent of nonvolatile ether extract, not more than 25 percent of crude fib er, not more than 6:5 percent of total ash, nor more than 0.5 of ash insoluable in hydrochloric acid. PIMENTO PImenton, pimineto, Spanish paprika, is paprika having the characteristic of that grown in Spain. It contains not more than 18 percent of non volatile ether extract, not more than 21 percent of crude fiber, not more than 8:5 percent of total ash, not more than I percent of ash Insoluable In hy drochloric acid. CELERY SEED Celery seed is the dried fruit of Celeri graveolens (L). Britton (Appium graveolens L.).
