UP) The state board for the mobilization of labor, with its skilled labor in ventory well under way, now is surveying farms, small businesses, and employes of state, county and city governments, the board has announced. Central registration offices are being established in cities and towns throughout the state, th surveys to be made by local com mittees appointed by Governor Charles A. Sprague. "With the completion of these surveys," the board said, "we hope to have a comprehensive picture of the skilled labor reservoir avail able for defense industries in any emergency that may arise in this area." Flying Club Plane Crashes Near Ontario ONTARIO. Nov. 21 ( A plane belonging to the Casey Jones flying service of Ontario crashed in a field 12 miles west of here yesterday, slightly in juring the pilot, Jim Watson of Parma, Idaho. Witnesses said power lines, broke the fall considerably. Wat son suffered only, cuts and bruises. Crew Steers Burned Vessel Into Port A WESTERN SCOTTISH PORT, Nov. 21. U. Members of the crew of the tanker Sandemetrio related how they brought the half burned vessel 1,000 miles into port after she had been attacked by the German sea raider which sank the merchant cruiser Jems Bay and scattered a convoy of 38 ships. The Sandemetrio fired at the raider until she herself caught fire and the crew abandoned her. The service's Ontario office re ported 9,273 job placements, most ly in the sugar beet and lettuce fields. The heavy potato harvest enabled the Klamath Falls office to place 7,923 persons. Other offices placing more than 1,000 persons during the month in cluded Portland with 1,298, Hood River 1.211, Eugene 1.08S, and Bend 1,034. In placements in private indus try, the Portland office led with 863, followed by Albany end Eu gene with 781 and 626, respective ly. The service stlU has 24,955 men, including 2,417 veterans and 7, 322 women on its active file ot un employed. G. F. Hurd Dies In x , Salem Wednesday Granville F. Hurd, former Eu gene resident and brother of Countv Jude-e Clinton Hurd, died Wednesday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock at Salem where he had lived for the oast 18 years. The funeral will be held at the Walker and Howells chapel in Salem, Sat urday at 10:30 a. m. Mr. Hurd was born in Wiscon sin 83 yean ago and had lived on the coast many yean. Beside his brother, he is survived by five children. Miss Conlfrea Hura, in structor in th West Seattle high school, Seattle; Mrs. Edward Kah ler of, Portland; Lieutenant-Colonel L. C. Hurd of the United States army air corps in Hawaii; Paul F. Hurd of San Francisco and Wayne Hurd of Eugene, Approximately 900 planes were produced in the United States dur ing August, 1940. Of this number, about 236 went to the British, some 396, largely trainers, were taken by this country, 84 went to other countries, and commercial planes 'rounded out the orders. Wood Oil Substitute Announced byPabco SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21. (U.w Discovery of a substitute for Chin wood oil or "rung oil," an important ingredient of most painta and varnishes which pres ently is imported, has been an nounced by Pabco industrial re search laboratories. Pabco said the discovery "may om anomer step ror American in oustry toward achievement of economic independence from for eign raw material sources." The Pabco laboratories are the technical division of the Paraffine CO, inc. Company spokesmen esti. mated a $20,000,000 business ' will be handed over to American farmers and American manufac turer when the new formula is nationally accepted." UP) Southern Pacific company had its best month in just 10 years for net railway operating income last month. Net income from operations ran over five million dollars for the first time since October 1930. The figure was $5,267,325. That compared with $4,484,502 in October last year. October is normally the peak traffic month for the railroad. Total railway operating revenues were $22,672,115, an increase of $956,848 over the 1939 month. More than 10 million of that total came from freight traffic. Total operating revenues for the first 10 months of this year in creased more than nine million dollars over 1939. to $189,276,416. (IP) Prime Minister Churchill, asked for a statement of objectives which would make It clear that Great Britain "is striving for new and better order in Europe," has re plied that "the time has not come when official declaration should be made of the war aims.'
