Tt Sixteen. THE REGISTER-GUARD, EUGENE, OREOOH Local News Holds Good, In Spite of War, is Word r; LOUISVILLE. Ky.. Nov. 21. 4V-Local news Is still holding its swn In reader appeal despite the mr, M. V. Atwood of Kocnester, K. V, associate editor and head of the Central news and editorial of tlee of Gannett newspapers, told Snanaginsj editors of Associated fress member newspapers at the .closing session of their eighth an nual convention. t: The editors gave a rising vote of commendation to the members of the Associated Press foreign staff for the work they now are doing. After adjournment the group motored to nearby Fort Knox Where they were shown the army's Hew armored force stationed there. Atwood reported on a sympos ium survey of 75 AP managing edi Jora. He said that with few ex ceptions the AP papers he sur veyed "have not let wars and inajor engagements on the political fronts diminish their emphasis on local they are still finding room jfor proper recognition of the ca reer and achievements of 'Mr. J. uentln Willoughby', newly- elect ed president of the chamber of lommerce." tf Atwood cited exceptions to this View by R. W. Simpson of the Tampa Tribune, C. E. Smith of the frairmont (W. Va.) Times and Wil liam L. Powers of the Youngstown '(Ohio) Vindicator, but said most managing editors share his view that "local news is the very heart of the newspaper, and It's a mighty important local story that is push ed out because of lack of space." Simpson's view was that "in such days as these, people are more interested In national and foreign news than in secondary local." Smith held that "war is the all-absorbing topic'' and Pow ers said that "local news has got to be a lot better than it used to be to get in." The "good will" theme in news. paper operation was discussed by Arthur Burrowes of the St. Joseph (Mo.) News-Press and Gazette. "We believe we live on good will," he said, citing that his papers sponsor annual Christmas parties, cooperate with churohes, encour age local photographers and art ists, operate a bulletin service. publicize nearby towns and spon sor ice and coal funds for the poor.
