(U.R) With nil due modesty, I wlh to announce that by night Jail on Wednesday I expect to be the talk of Honolulu. This liner lands at Honolulu Wednesday morning, and I Intend wasting no time In showing off all the things Hawaiian that I have mas tered since deciding to come on this trip. 1 shall go immediately go to Waikiki Beach, don me sea drawers, and demand the biggest and most treacherous surfboard available. I chuckle now when 1 think how surprised everyone will be when, after a triumphant ride in on the biggest wave I tell them that I had never set foot on a surfboard before. My secret Is that before I left honle I rltced up an Iron lltj board on twit pairs of roller skates and practiced on It by the hour. Ity the lime I sailed I could make It from the living room to the kitchen without fcttlnf a scratch on Ihr furniture or me. To make the trial spins more realistic, I had my wife throw buckets of water on me as I whined by. Belwcen workouts of my surf board I practiced on the ukelele and 1 can now play "They're Wearing 'Em Higher in Hawaii," the first two bars of "Yaka Hula Hleka Dula," the last part of "On the Beach of Waikiki" and the triumphal march from Aida. I am practicing constantly here on the boat and two or three Hawalians among the passengers have assured me thai Ihey never beard anything QUjtC like it. I am confident that when I sit on the beach at Waikiki. and run through my repertoire, I will not regi-el the long hours of prac tice I put in I must admit that learning the Hula Hula dance was a little more difficult for me than surf-hoarding nr ukelele playing. I learned through a correspondence school and al though 1 followed directions to the letter I am not as good at It as I would like to be. The first time I danced II for ' a friend, he called a doctor and kept saying, "there, there, old fellow," to ma until the doctor arrived. I have Im proved since that perform ance, hut I still have a ten dency to break Into a burk-and-wlng toward the finish. One of the unique fnims of fishing In the Hawaiian Islands, I have heard, is spear fishing. I am prepared to he awfully good at thai. By n fortunate coincidence, I spent last Sunday afternoon at the home nf Irvln 9, Cobb, who has n small cement pool full of goldfish. Using an umbrella for a spear, I practiced poking at the goldfish and while f never did score n direct hit I came dole enough several times to prove to myself that I could have speared them if they had been larger, and had Mrs. Cobb not kept saying to me, "Henry, leave those fish alone." Halsey and Shedd have been established as favorites for the county championship which .vill be determined in tournament play at Harrisburg February 23-25. The Bruins meet the division leaders, the once-beaten California Bears, at Berkeley Friday and Sat urday nights while Southern Cali fornia and Stanford clash in a pair of games at Los Angeles. U. C. L. A. gave second-place U. S. C. a scare at Los Angeles last Friday night. The Trojans pulled out a 59 to 49 win chiefly through the sharpshooting efforts of Center Dale Sears, who scored 21 points. California had little trouble dis posing of Stanford at Berkeley, 43 to 25. There were no conference games Saturday night. Ralph Vaughn, Southern Califor nia forward who established a new single-game record of 36 points in a game against U. C. L. A. early in the season, continued to lead the individual scoring in the southern division race with 99 points in six games. The University of Oregon var sity swimming team will leave Tuesday for a week's invasion of California and meets with the Uni versity of California, Stanford and San Jose State college. The Webfoot Mermen open against California at Berkeley Wednesday, then move to Palo Alto to face Stanford the follow ing day. The final meet will be against San Jose Saturday. Coach Ned Johns will take eleven swimmers on the trip. It will mark the first California ap pearances of a Webfoot swimming team since 1935, when the Web foots defeated the same three op ponents. Although Oregon has lost both of its dual meet starts to date, to Oregon State and Washington, the Webfoots are expected to make favorable showings against the southern teams. In at least three events Oregon should encounter little opposition. They are the backstroke, breast stroke and medley relay, in which Sherman Wetmore, Jack Dallas and Pierce Mallory combined to set three new Pacific coast inter collegiate records here last Satur day against Washington. Dallas cut 10.1 seconds from the former 200-yard breaststroke rec ord by swimming the distance in 2:26.6 against the Huskies. Wet more turned in a 1:39.8 time for the 150-yard backstroke, as com pared to the old mark of 1:40.1. Dallas and Wetmore, both soph omores, also teamed with Mallory to set a new record of 3:03.2 in the 300-vard relay. The old record was"3:08.1, set by Stanford. Other swimmers who will make the trip are Tom Starbuck, Ralph Cathey, Lee Gaffney, Ralph Laf ferty, Jim Mamie, Jack Levy, Al Sandner and Elmer Mallory. Johnny Whitehead Will Be 25-Game Winner If He Uses Head Pinion's Freethrow Wins for Reedsport REEDSPORT. Feb. 13. (Spe cial) Dalton Pinion, substitute forward for the Reedsport "Braves," converted a last-minute foul throw which gave Reedsport a 26-25 victory over the long shot artists from Elkton. on the Reeds port floor Friday night. Elkton started the game with a rally that netted 9 points before Reedsport found their stride. The first quarter ended with a score of 11-5 for Elkton. but Reedsport's steady drive ousted Elkton's lead by halftime 13-12. Borrevik led scoring honors with 10 counters for Reedsport while Andrews. Elkton guard, held up second netting 8 points. PASADENA, Calif. Jimmy Dykes, here for the Santa Anita races and to await the opening I of the White Sox training camp, hopes Johnny Whitehead, the large right-hander, means what he says about this being his year. Dykes believes Whitehead would win 25 games without trouble if lie made the most of his ability. "Whitehead has more pitching sense out on the hill than two thuds of the big winners in the American league," asserts the Chicago manager. "He loves to beat the best.
