PARADE
By HENRY MeLEMORl
ABOARD S. S. MATSONIA,
Somewhere In the Pacific, Feb, 13.
(U.R) With nil due modesty, I
wlh to announce that by night
Jail on Wednesday I expect to be
the talk of Honolulu. This liner
lands at Honolulu Wednesday
morning, and I Intend wasting
no time In showing off all the
things Hawaiian that I have mas
tered since deciding to come on
this trip.
1 shall go immediately go to
Waikiki Beach, don me sea
drawers, and demand the biggest
and most treacherous surfboard
available. I chuckle now when 1
think how surprised everyone will
be when, after a triumphant ride
in on the biggest wave I tell them
that I had never set foot on a
surfboard before.
My secret Is that before I
left honle I rltced up an Iron
lltj board on twit pairs of
roller skates and practiced on
It by the hour. Ity the lime I
sailed I could make It from
the living room to the kitchen
without fcttlnf a scratch on
Ihr furniture or me. To make
the trial spins more realistic,
I had my wife throw buckets
of water on me as I whined
by.
Belwcen workouts of my surf
board I practiced on the ukelele
and 1 can now play "They're
Wearing 'Em Higher in Hawaii,"
the first two bars of "Yaka Hula
Hleka Dula," the last part of "On
the Beach of Waikiki" and the
triumphal march from Aida.
I am practicing constantly here
on the boat and two or three
Hawalians among the passengers
have assured me thai Ihey never
beard anything QUjtC like it.
I am confident that when I sit
on the beach at Waikiki. and
run through my repertoire, I will
not regi-el the long hours of prac
tice I put in
I must admit that learning
the Hula Hula dance was a
little more difficult for me
than surf-hoarding nr ukelele
playing. I learned through a
correspondence school and al
though 1 followed directions
to the letter I am not as good
at It as I would like to be.
The first time I danced II for '
a friend, he called a doctor
and kept saying, "there, there,
old fellow," to ma until the
doctor arrived. I have Im
proved since that perform
ance, hut I still have a ten
dency to break Into a burk-and-wlng
toward the finish.
One of the unique fnims of
fishing In the Hawaiian Islands, I
have heard, is spear fishing. I am
prepared to he awfully good at
thai. By n fortunate coincidence,
I spent last Sunday afternoon at
the home nf Irvln 9, Cobb, who
has n small cement pool full of
goldfish. Using an umbrella for a
spear, I practiced poking at the
goldfish and while f never did
score n direct hit I came dole
enough several times to prove to
myself that I could have speared
them if they had been larger, and
had Mrs. Cobb not kept saying
to me, "Henry, leave those fish
alone."
The other passengers on (he
boat arc idling away their time
by lazing in the sun 01) the deck,
swimming In the pool, and going
to cocktail parlies and dances
while , busier thin a beaver wilh
a new upper plate, am readying
myself to enjoy Haw aiian life at I
the fullest.
They may near, now. when I
careen down the deck on my Iron
ing board, ukelele in hand, hut
ey will live In hear me acclaimed,
they will hve to hear me acclaimed

and then move over to Moscow to

Fans F.ye Husky Trip
The success or failure of the
Huskies on their trip may settle
the championship puzzle. Should
Washington win all four contests
it will be In a nice spot to pass up
Oregon in the final dash. A single
defeat would put them on the
brink of elimination, while two
setbacks would mean "curtains."
Oregon isn't putting any of its
championship aspirations in the
hands of W. S. C. or Idaho, how
ever, but plans to keep out in front
on Its own by winning Its own
games as they come.
Coach Howard Hobson rested

Kitzmiller, Londes
Meet Here Thursday
Despite 1300 signatures on a pe
tition asking that Bulldog .Tack
son he given a return title match
against Champion George Wagner,
the EUgene Wrestling commission
I Monday had made no decision re
garding the proposed bout for the
Eugene armory Thursday night.
Although only 500 of those
, names were Salem fans, unless the
; Eugene commission makes a deci
i slon before Tuesday noon I'm go
ing to ask the capital city fathers
to stage the title match," Jackson
said Monday.
In the meantime Promoter Herb
Owen was busy lining up a sup
porting card for the unscheduled
headline attraction. George Kitz
miller. Seattle heavy weight, has
been booked to meet Jim Londes
in the 45-minute kcmi-final. It
will lie the first appearance for the
105 -pound northwest meame.
Owen, who has evaded the slow
heavyweight performers during re
cent years, said Monday that Kitz
miller is an exception. "The boy
is fast and is ns tough as he is
heavy. However, in Londes. I be
lieve Kitzmiller will have all he
can handle." Owen said.
Wagner wasn't happy regarding
! the commission's indecision re
garding the proposed title match.
"I beat JackSon once and last
week sent Garibaldi home with a
.defeat. I don't consider any of the
I other formidable championship
i rival and besides I've already ac-
Cepted a title match against Otis
ICUngnUUI here early m March,"
I Wagner said.
The popular coast light-hcavy-I
weight titleholder intimated, nev
j ertheless, that he would not
squawk on any verdict handed
dOWn by the local commission.

It looks as if University of Cali

a percentage of .000 in six games,
is in for two more basketball lac

vision, Pacific Coast Conference.
The Bruins meet the division

of games at Los Angeles.
U. C. L. A. gave second-place
U. S. C. a scare at Los Angeles last
Friday night. The Trojans pulled
out a 59 to 49 win chiefly through
the sharpshooting efforts of Center
Dale Sears, who scored 21 points.
California had little trouble dis
posing of Stanford at Berkeley, 43

games Saturday night.
Ralph Vaughn, Southern Califor
nia forward who established a new
single-game record of 36 points in
a game against U. C. L. A. early in
the season, continued to lead the
individual scoring in the southern
division race with 99 points in six
games. His lBVi-point average

The Webfoot Mermen open

against San Jose Saturday.
Coach Ned Johns will take
eleven swimmers on the trip. It
will mark the first California ap
pearances of a Webfoot swimming
team since 1935, when the Web
foots defeated the same three op
ponents. Although Oregon has lost both
of its dual meet starts to date, to
Oregon State and Washington, the
Webfoots are expected to make
favorable showings against the
southern teams.
In at least three events Oregon
should encounter little opposition.
They are the backstroke, breast
stroke and medley relay, in which
Sherman Wetmore, Jack Dallas
and Pierce Mallory combined to
set three new Pacific coast inter
collegiate records here last Satur
day against Washington.
Dallas cut 10.1 seconds from the
former 200-yard breaststroke rec
ord by swimming the distance in
2:26.6 against the Huskies. Wet
more turned in a 1:39.8 time for
the 150-yard backstroke, as com
pared to the old mark of 1:40.1.
Dallas and Wetmore, both soph
omores, also teamed with Mallory
to set a new record of 3:03.2 in the
300-vard relay. The old record
was"3:08.1, set by Stanford.
Other swimmers who will make
the trip are Tom Starbuck, Ralph
Cathey, Lee Gaffney, Ralph Laf

Elkton started the game with a

Reedsport found their stride. The

PASADENA, Calif. Jimmy
Dykes, here for the Santa Anita
races and to await the opening
I of the White Sox training camp,
hopes Johnny Whitehead, the
large right-hander, means what
he says about this being his year.
Dykes believes Whitehead
would win 25 games without
trouble if lie made the most of
his ability.
"Whitehead has more pitching
sense out on the hill than two
thuds of the big winners in the
American league," asserts the
Chicago manager.
"He loves to beat the best.
Clubs like the Yankees, Red Sox,
and Detroit don't phase him."
Hykes says that Johnny White

off the field to be the pitcher he
should be.

By ADOLPH RUPP

LEXINGTON, Ky. The man-for-man
defense being used today
is much different from that of not
so many years back.
At Kentucky we use a man-for-man
defense with a shitting fea
ture. We shift not only on every
screen or block, but with every po
tential block. This avoid confu
sion. Otherwise one boy might
say. "I shifted because of the
block." And the other boy might
say: "But I was not blocked ."
This lead some experts to claim
we use a zone defense, but nothing
could be farther from the truth.
We merely plan to have a good
defense under all conditions.
Many teams have the shop-worn
idea that the best defense is a good
offense but Just think what will
happen if they have a poor night
, at the basket and t heir opponents
have a good offense.
Our first insurance against being
beaten easily under similar circum-,
stances Is a sound defense.
We spend hours working out de- .
tails.
We play man-for-man tight up :
to the free throw lane and loosen j
up a bit after the offensive man
j goes beyond that point by switch-!
I ing in an emergency.
We fight opposing guards bring
j ing the ball down the floor and try
to intercept passes. By playing
our opponents tight we are able
to do this frequently, because our
men are in as good a position to
I get the ball as the offensive
j players.
A good defense is beautiful to
I watch in operation.
It makes for a sound team.
That's the kind of squad that
, gets farthest.
