Secrets Of Baffling Phone Trick Revealed To Young "Five Star" Magicians By Wizardo "C AN PEOPLE really read minds?" Hundreds of Wizardo Magic club members have asked me this question and it is one t" is difficult to an swer. Today we are ;oing to learn i trick that is so mystifying it could very well be called mind-reading, but when a magician per forms a mind reading stunt, everyone knows it is all a trick, but "catch it if you can." One of the more famous mod ern miracles to be Invented is the "Telephone Trick" which I will teach you today, There are over a dozen ways to perform this trick, but it has been steadily improved "upon until now it is one of the most amazing tricks of modern magic 1 To those who "don't know how," the only solution of this trick seems to be mental telepathy! So get out your Secret Code and let's And out, EFFECT: This is what to say and do while performing the Tele phone Trick. After you have per formed the two tricks in lesson number one, turn to your audi ence and say: "You have just witnessed two Hindu tricks. I will now attempt to entertain, and fool you, with something a little different in the way of magic. I will try and prove to you that it is possible for one magician to send thought waves, through the air, to another magician, no matter how far away he is. Most people would call this 'mental telepathy,' but we ' magicians call it 'tel-a-magic' be cause we use a telephone to prove that we have really been able to end our thought message. (x IOW, will some member of the audience please call out the name of his favorite card, or, if you haven't a favorite card, just name any card at all." (Let us say that someone calls the "ten of spades" then con tinue): "Thank you. The gentleman has, just named the ten of spades as his favorite card and you will all agree with me that, until he called his card, no one in this room could possibly have known what card he was going to name. "However, on of my brother magicians and I have been prac ticing 'telamagic' together and by thinking of this card real hard, I believe I can tell him what it is by sending out thought waves. Let's see if I'm right. "Will someone go to the 'phone : V ""'5!S f LET S make Sunday morning breakfast an event! Eschcnburg AN ALL-BLACK bird, about 18 inches long; sometimes shy and sneaking, sometimes noisy and ujld, but always with the gift of successfully getting into, and usually out of mischief. Trapped, poisoned, shot, gassed and cursed, he still maintains his strongholds at our very doorsteps, flourishes and Is increasing in numbers. While many birds are given crodit for being the wisest among the feathered tribes, the Crow usually polls the most votes in this respect. His larger rela tive, the Raven, may run him a close second, but usually inhabits more inaccessible areas and is not so easily observed as the black STUFFED POTATOES Cut gash in each potato, bake, scoop out potatoes, season with butter, salt, paprika, minced pars ley and few drops onion juice. Return to shells. Sprinkle with paprika, reheat. Sprinkle salt in greased pan just before putting in fish to fry and they will never stick. The second secret I will teach you today is one that you can use to perform several card tricks. It can also be used with the Tele phone Trick. Using this secret, in stead of having your audience name a card, you can let them select any card out of an ordinary pack i cards, replace the card in the deck without showing it to anyone, then have them phone your friend! SECRET: In the language of magicians there are two kinds of playing cards. The "one-way deck" and the "two-way deck." A one-way deck is a pack of cards which has a BEWGADO 1RGPO VUWN of OUWP WUDX. Take a pack of cards GPUG PUF BE WGADOF IRGPO VUWNF and GADR OUWP WUDX FIGPO BEWGADOF UDO all DEZPG FEXO AB and YUWERZ the FUTO JUL. Now, have someone pull a card from the pack. You can immediate ly YERX GPOED WUDX VL SIINERZ GPDA the XOWN YID GPO BEWGADO GPUG is ABF EXO XIJR. Practice this trick carefully, then use it in connection with the Telephone Trick. It makes a gnW trick, even better! See how many, original card tricks you can make up ur.ing this "one-way" deck secret! Original tricks are always the best and you may be able to invent one that will fool even the grentrst magicians! You will find, as you continue your studies in magic, that the more you perform maKic, the easier it becomes to battle your spectators. At first, when you pre sent your tricks, someone in the audience may "cntch on". When this happens, take the trick to your private den and practice it a few more times in front of a mir ror .ind nine times out of ten you will see why and where you made your mistake in presentation. "Practice makeH perfect" Is a splendid rule for magicians to follow. All magic tricks arc simple when you know how and it Is only through clever presentation and interesting "patter" that you will be able to leave your audi ence completely fooled. Many club members have writ ten me about the neighborhood Wizardo Magic Clubs they are forming. I think this is a great idea. By forming clubs, members can heip each other with their magic and it s more fun to worst trirks out with a few of your fricndi. Next week we will return to the Orient and learn some of the secrets of "Chinese Magic. Have your friends send in their Pledge Cards today anil organize your own neighborhood V). M. C, CROW and C. T. Hall, Jr. thief who will steal a silver spoon from the kitchen. Bright, shiny objects have a peculiar fascination for these birds. Once a Crow spots a coin, piece of tin or nny shiny piece of material, he is not satisfied until he has stolen and hidden it where he thinks it will not be found. Crows' nests are large and bulky ami me made of twigs and liber. They lay four to five eggs, which are green, spotted with black. As to food, they are not very particular, their diet consisting of almost anything they can get. The Crow ranges west of the Rockies, from Canada to Mexico, Sister States RIVER OF THE WEST . SAILORS of five nations, Spain, Russia, England, France and America, sought for many years to find a waterway into the State we know as Oregon, They knew there wns such a river, they called it the "River of the West." A Bostonian named Robert Gray, located the river in 1792, and he named it Columbia which was the nnmo of his ship. He claimed the river in the name of the American republic and then ho Bailed away to China. Lewis and Clark searched for the heudwntcrs of the Columbia Rlvor thirteen years later. Then came trappers and traders from other countries. - In 1843 the great trek of the Old Oregon Trail was begun. What stories of hardship, cholera epidemics, tragic deaths, discour agement and heartache the old immigrant road of 1852 could tell. But these brave pioneers were to be the very backbone of a great state. Portland was built' near the Willamette and Columbia Rivers. This settlement was a hundred miles from the sea and many peo ple thought it a poor location, but ths city's growth has proved they were wrong. .With some changes in the river ocean liners come to the very city itself. To reach Portland from the ocean one travclB past twenty-nine miles of docks, wharves, mills and ship yards. There are seven bridges crossing the Willamette. Next to the Columbia River, Coos liny ranks second as a har hor nnd it Is located to the south west of Oregon. At one time the bar of this bay was considered a great problem to skippers, but en gineering has smoothed out that handicap. And now the flags of many nations wave from many commercial vessels loading cedar logs in Coos Bay. Oregon's water ways and har bors are but a portion of her many fascinating features. .:; PAGE SEVEN !
