"Mr. Emery asks If my buying of timber waa ethical. My opponent, Judge Barnard, has wade sevt rnl reul estate deals while holding office as county judge, one during the past few weeks. This was not only ethical, Mr. Emery, but Judyo Bumard's own bush. ess, and own personal affairs. Holding office does not bar one from private transactions. "Mr. Emery cheerfully points out a business transaction of mine, wherein he says on Not. 24, 1000, Fred Fisk as sheriff sold to Fred Fisk the MV of Sec. 16. Tp. 20, S. H. 6 W. 160 acres for $11.57, and that on November 20, 1906, just two days later Fred Fisk sold to Starrett & Hovey this aame 160 acres for $2500. Half Truth Charged "The real facts alwut the transac tion nro as follows: I bought the NW of Sec. 10, Tp. 20, H. It. 0 W, on Sept. 10, 1902, filed the deed for rec ord Oct 4, 1002, in hook 50 nt page 40; I sold the same on No. 20, 1!hj0, four yeara later to Storrett & Ho Tey. When I went to sell this prop erty, the abstract shows a flaw in my title, and an old tax certificnte to J, It. Marlcy. dated in 1803 wns out standing against the same. Thin tax certificate was for $11.57, and in or der to clear the title, I wns com pelled to buy np this old tax certifi cate, and in order to make a clear title wns advised by my attorney to take a deed on my certificate and this corrective deed wns recorded Nov. 24, 1006, and the transaction was closed Novemher 26, 11KX1, some four years after I bought and owned the property. A perfect legitimate trans action Promises No Mud "Mr, Emery, a truth half told, with malicious intent, is a willful lie. The next time some one gives you a letter to sign be sure the letter contains facts. Ton might get into serious trouble. "Mr. Emery, I never have end sever will an a candidate for office in dulge in mud-sllnging, or permit the same by my friends, if within my knowledge, and within my power to prevent. I would warn you that the dirtiest bog that wallows among the garbage, la the dirt and slime, can root up the fairest flowers that grow In the garden. Life Is too short, and political office too insignificant to villifv charactera and endeavor to de htroy reputations builded up by a life tune of acta and deeds. (Signed) "FRED FISK." II Duoa Conies Back And this from Mr. Keener: "Last Snudny, October 10, in a paid advertisement in the Iteginter-Guard. Edward F. This wns clenn poli tics liecauMft a democratic committee. including Mr. Bailey, made the statement. 'Three days Inter Keeney extolled the virtues of Mr. Swarts and declar ed him to bo 'by far the superior of the two candidates. This is dirty politics and Keeney is the 'Mussolini of the courthouse.' "Let It be dirty or let It be clean. Mr, Bailey's proclamation distinguish ing me as the Mussolini of the court house is taken without offense, for what more should I crave than his ad vertising my enthusiastic support of Tom Swarts for sheriff and at the same time unwittingly establishing in the minds of his readers the fact that my letter got under the skin in the opposing camp and that there is a justified suspicion that 'Mussolini' still has a message undelivered. "As to Mr Bailey's claim that he has definite proof of my having a promise from Mr. Swarts regarding appointments, there is but one an-, Bwpr SOMEONE HAS FALSI-1 F.I ED. (Signed) "BEN F. KEENEY."
