Dulles stood there, the photog raphers' spotlights beating down mercilessly upon him. The State Department auditor ium was filled with reporters, so eager to question Dulles that they - were shouting in their efforts to get recognition. It's easy to explain the inten sity. Ysu might say that, at this stage in the diplomacy game, the world has became, for better or for worse, the secretary of state's oyster. And right now, the oy ster's in a stew. Troubles, troubles everywhere. And Dulles stood there, looking tired, the muscles around his left eye twitching, as the , questions rolled in. Americans now are intensely un popular. How about that, Mr. Sec retary? Should Vice President Nix on have stayed at home? Should we aid South American dictators? Now, then, what about Lebanon? Indonesia? Nasser? News Shutdown And is there really a shutdown on newsmen interviewing State Department employes unless a press officer is standing by on the ready? Normally, a reporter is some thing of a chameleon. He tends to take on the coloration of his news sources. So a sports writer may have the cocky swagger of an ath lete, a police reporter the blunt ness of a cop, a man on the dip lomatic beat the urbanity of a for eign service officer. But this tendency can be shaken off quickly. At Dulles' news conference Tuesday the jousting for questions , had all the touches of a battle royal. The way to get the secretary's ear, it turned out, was to speak up in a well-pitched bawl, and keep at it until everyone else was, drowned out. Only once was diplomacy prac "ticed, and then, appropriately, it was by Dulles. He ignored one strong-voiced male reporter to recognize a lady reporter whose "high-pitched query had soared in above the din. Well, Dulles did his best to field everything that came his way. Kept saying, in a more round about way, that surely things are not as bad as they seem, that we must have friends somewhere. Curiously, he seemed to have an answer of some sort for every thing in the world except that which is happening right under his nose. When, it came to news policies in his own department, Dulles said he simply didn t know. - Finally, after 45 minutes, with - questioners still shouting, "Mr. .
