II) Statesman, Salem, Ore., Mon., April 21, '58 U.S. Pavilion Top Draw at World's Fair (Picture oi Wlrepholo page) BRUSSELS W)-Nearly half million visitors jammed the world s Fair in sunny weather Sunday, tying up traffic and ap parently having a wonderful time. Every pavilion that" was open had record crowds. Belgian guides said the U.S. pavilion with its live fashion, models was still outdrawing them all. The Rus sians were a close second wth ther Sputnik show. Thousands witnessed the official opening of the Vatican's first ex hibition at any World's Fair. Msgr. Ephraim Forni, papal nun cio to Brussels, inaugurated, the Holy See's impressive building en titled: "Civitas Dei'-' - City of God. One of the fair's most striking pieces of modern architecture, the Vatican's pavilion is a church in the shape of an elongated triangle built to hold 2,500 persons. It is 623 feet high. When the fair closes Oct. 19 it will be dismantled and reassembled somewhere else. Msgr. Forni called the Vatican's exhibition "an expression of the victory of the spirit over materi alism." In addition to the exhibits, daily Masses will be held in the church. Elsewhere on the fairgrounds, Britain's two pubs were overflow ing with beer-drinking visitors. West Germany's restaurant had to turn customers away. Qjmmunist Hungary's restaurant also had a big crowd. And there was a long line at ine American restaurant which had on the menu Dixie-styled bar becued chicken, baked Virginia ham, roast turkey, roast sirloin oi beef and hamburgers. Atom Smasher Planned CAIRO ay An authoritative Egyptian source says the most powerful atom smasher in the Middle East is being installed at Inchas, northeast of Cairo, and will be in operation in a few weeks. The Informant said it will gen erate three million volts of elec tric current. The atom smasher and an atomic reactor also to be installed at Inchas both were i Ri posted from the Soviet Union, he said. 1 Earth Tremors Felt in Chile Cities SANTIAGO. Chile. April 20 10- Strong earth tremors were felt last night in the cities of Talca and Linares. There was consider able panic but there were no re ports of injuries or property dam age. Talca is about 144 miles south of here and Linares 180 miles south. Gutzon Borglum, American sculp tor of the Mount Rushmore Me morial in South Dakota, lived from 1867 to 1941. By German Visit- Elizabeth Draws Denial BONN, Germany (MA govern ment spokesman has denied a Sublished report that Chancellor onrad Adenauer has invited Brit ain's Queen Elizabeth II to make a state visit to Bonn. The London Sundav Exbress said Adenauer extended an invi tation when he was entertained at a royal banquet in Londojf last week. Not so, a Bonn spokesman said Sunday. He added, however, that the West German government cer tainly would welcome a visit by Britain's Queen.
