U.S. Pavilion
Top Draw at
World's Fair
(Picture oi Wlrepholo page)
BRUSSELS W)-Nearly half
million visitors jammed the
world s Fair in sunny weather
Sunday, tying up traffic and ap
parently having a wonderful time.
Every pavilion that" was open
had record crowds. Belgian
guides said the U.S. pavilion with
its live fashion, models was still
outdrawing them all. The Rus
sians were a close second wth
ther Sputnik show.
Thousands witnessed the official
opening of the Vatican's first ex
hibition at any World's Fair.
Msgr. Ephraim Forni, papal nun
cio to Brussels, inaugurated, the
Holy See's impressive building en
titled: "Civitas Dei'-' - City of
God.
One of the fair's most striking
pieces of modern architecture, the
Vatican's pavilion is a church in
the shape of an elongated triangle
built to hold 2,500 persons. It is
623 feet high. When the fair closes
Oct. 19 it will be dismantled and
reassembled somewhere else.
Msgr. Forni called the Vatican's
exhibition "an expression of the
victory of the spirit over materi
alism." In addition to the exhibits, daily
Masses will be held in the church.
Elsewhere on the fairgrounds,
Britain's two pubs were overflow
ing with beer-drinking visitors.
West Germany's restaurant had to
turn customers away. Qjmmunist
Hungary's restaurant also had a
big crowd.
And there was a long line at
ine American restaurant which
had on the menu Dixie-styled bar
becued chicken, baked Virginia
ham, roast turkey, roast sirloin
oi beef and hamburgers.
