Tex., Feb. 12 OH Air Force officials today ex pressed guarded optimism over man'i ability to withstand the rig era of apace travel as Donald G. Byrd Number 5 to Quit Post By ARTHUR EDSON WASHINGTON Senate must be slipping Sometimes it has seemed that only death or a political knockout could pry a senator from office. But when Harry Flood Byrd (D-Va) said today he will not run for re-election this year, he be came the fifth senator to reach such conclusion. Previously Sens. Edward Mar tin (B-Pai. who is 7S; Sen. H. Alexander Smith (R-NJ. 77; Wil liam JCoowland (R-Califi, 49; and William Jenner R-Ind, 49. said they had had it. They gave various reasons Byrd, for example, has an ailing wife but they add up to a sur prisingly large group to leave the Senate voluntarily. In some ways, Byrd's decision is the biggest shock. True, he will be 71 on June 10. But he has made such a career of going bis own. and often lonely, course that he had become an institution. Shortly after he went to sleep, an emergency bell in his cabin rang and a signal indicated that his oxygen supply was broken. Farrell awoke, noted the signal, and had his emergency gas mask in place in just 19.5 seconds. Air Force officials reported. The study win be made in co operation with the Randolph AFB School of Aviation Medicine which is conducting FarreU's test. Frozen Bodies SliOf Four Boys Found in Creek DUBLIN. Vs.. Feb. 12 Urv-Res-cuers pulled the frozen bodies of four missing playmates from the cold waters of Peak Creek near here Tuesday. The dead boys, all cousins, were Tommy j Rigdon, HI, and Danny Rigdon. Flaming Heater In Vehicle Brings Driving Charge DETROIT. Mica., Feb. 12 -Trsffic Judge George T. Murphy agreed Tuesday that Harry W. Jones' do-it-yourself car heater was an ingenious idea. But he convicted Jones of reck less driving, anyway. Patrolman Alien Crouter said Jones' heater was of the open hearth variety a two gallon can partly filled with alcohol and lighted. Crouter said be could see flames and smoke inside so he stopped Jones' car. The can was blazing merrily on the front seat, between Jones and his wife, "My heater wasn't working," Jones said, "and ft was awful cold." Explosion Heard At Port Orford PORTLAND, Feb. 12 - The estate of Carl A. Schram, Port land contractor who died last Sep tember, was appraised today at $3,267,149. Appraisers reported the bulk of the estate was in stocks. Schram also had a half interest in the Parkes-Schram Construction Co. His partnership was valued at t440.7M. aianted as heirs were the widow, Ida Marie Schram, and three sons, all of Portland. A sister. Merle Elaine Nichols, Oregon City, was bequeathed 110,000.
