Senate must be slipping
Sometimes it has seemed that
only death or a political knockout
could pry a senator from office.
But when Harry Flood Byrd
(D-Va) said today he will not run
for re-election this year, he be
came the fifth senator to reach
such conclusion.
Previously Sens. Edward Mar
tin (B-Pai. who is 7S; Sen. H.
Alexander Smith (R-NJ. 77; Wil
liam JCoowland (R-Califi, 49; and
William Jenner R-Ind, 49. said
they had had it.
They gave various reasons
Byrd, for example, has an ailing
wife but they add up to a sur
prisingly large group to leave the
Senate voluntarily.
In some ways, Byrd's decision
is the biggest shock. True, he
will be 71 on June 10. But he has
made such a career of going bis
own. and often lonely, course that
he had become an institution.

During the 2S years he has been
in the Senate, Byrd's statements
calling for more economy in gov
ernment have become a part of
the scenery, like the reading of
Washington's Farewell Address in
Congress every Feb. 22.
Successful in the newspaper
business, successful as an apple
grower be and his partners raise
such a large crop every person
in this country could have one of
their apples Byrd brought into
government this fiscal philosophy:
You don't save money by spend
ing it. junior.
So in 1938 be was saying: "We
have at Washington today the
most costly, the most wasteful
and the most bureaucratic form
government this Republic has
ever known or ever been afflicted
with."

And though government has
steadily become larger and cost
lier, Byrd has fought it stubbornly
ever step of the way.
But it wasn't only in monetary
matters that Byrd often seemed
to be playing a lone hand. He
brought this up himself' in 1952
wbea he announced he would not
support his fellow Democrat, Ad
lai Stevenson, for the presidency.
Byrd pointed out that in 1934 be
bad been one of the few senators
to oppose the National Recovery
Act, that in 1935 he was one of

"One experiment cannot be con
sidered final. We may have in

the halfway mark of his seven
day simulated space flight at 9:13
p m. tonight

Bronx, wbo is living in the same
air pressure that is encountered
at 11.000 feet altitude, has been

an emergency bell in his cabin
rang and a signal indicated that
his oxygen supply was broken.
Farrell awoke, noted the signal,
and had his emergency gas mask
in place in just 19.5 seconds. Air
Force officials reported.

It was feared that boredom
would be one of the greatest has
'ards of space flight, officials said.
But Farrell. who reads two text
books and listens to recorded mu
sic during rest periods in his 14
hour day, has shown no boredom.
The battery of instruments at
tached to electrodes taped over
FarreU's body show "no signifi
cant change whatever" in respir
ation, heart, blood pressure, or
other physical conditions, officials
said again today.
Last night, Farrell. who is his
own cook, had a turkey dinner,.
He opened the can containing the
especially prepared dinner and
heated it on the hot plate in the
cabin.
At nearby Austin, University of
Texas officials announced today
that special biochemical tests
would be given 300 selected cadets
at Lackland Air Force Base here
to study human stresses at ex
treme altitudes and temperatures.
The study win be made in co
operation with the Randolph AFB
School of Aviation Medicine which
is conducting FarreU's test.

Jones' do-it-yourself car heater
was an ingenious idea.
But he convicted Jones of reck
less driving, anyway.
Patrolman Alien Crouter said
Jones' heater was of the open
hearth variety a two gallon can
partly filled with alcohol and
lighted.
Crouter said be could see flames
and smoke inside so he stopped
Jones' car. The can was blazing
merrily on the front seat, between
Jones and his wife,
"My heater wasn't working,"
Jones said, "and ft was awful
cold."

Appraisers reported the bulk of
the estate was in stocks. Schram
