Rube Sanders Known for Versatility (Stery atae aa pat Reuben (Rube) Sanders, tl-yrar eld former Oregon athletic great whe died here Friday, was known for his versatility. Sandert. who started a career as a gridiron terror at Chemawa Indian School, was alto adept at baseball, basketball and track, In keeping with his Rogue River Indian lineage, he also won hon ors in archery. Regular Galfer When almost 09, he played golf regularly and managed to shoot nine holes in as low as 42. Rube, as he was affectionately known, played football for a va riety of college and independent teams in early years of the cen tury when eligibility standards were loose. He played at many at five grid games in a single week and he didn t quit as a player until he was 42. That last game came in 1911 and he was playing with a Chemawa team against University of Ore gon. A broken wrist in the con test brought the decision to re tire. Schools and independents for which Sanders played at various times included Willamette and Pa cific universities, old Bishop Scott Academy of Portland and Mult nomah Athletic Club. Coach lag Career His playing days at an end, Sanders began a coaching career at Chemawa that brought addi tional recognition. What may still be a record is the 104-0 win chalked by one of Rube's Che mawa elevens over Newberg High. The man who might be called the Jim Thorpe of the Northwest, sparked old Sherman Institute of California to an astonishing upset victory over the famed Thorpe-led Carlisle Indians in 1904. In that game, Sanders played the immor tal Jim on at least even terms. Each scored two touchdowns. Another Sanders feat was win ning seven track gold medals at the 1905 World's Fair at Portland. He did this by dominating in shot put, hammer throw, high jump, broad jump and discus. Chemawa, where Rube later worked as a maintenance employe. has remembered its most famous athlete by naming its athletic field after Sanders. In his latter years in Salem, Rube Sanders was still an active man as he pursued hobbies of golf, hunting, fishing, fly-tieing and bow-making. $1,100 Judgment Meted in Public Aid Fraud Case A $1,100 judgment was levied against Frank floasch. 74. of 252 Cottage St. NE, Friday In Marion County Circuit Court for alleged fraudulent receipt of public at isiance funds.
