July 14 A toy balloon of Ed Dolan and Larry Lock wood, young McMinnville youths, really went sailing last month. The boys have received word that it was found in late June at Jamieson. II miles northwest of Vale. This is approximately 300 miles from McMinnville. L The boys made a hydrogen gen erator, and attached tags with name and address on the balloon requesting a reply when found. July 14 i - A Paa American Stratocruiser put down safely on Wake Island Friday night with 54 passenger who had been warned to be ready to "ditch at any moment" during a flight from Honolulu. One of its four engines waa dead. Capt. Fred Walts. 44. San Fran cisco, said he radioed for help as a routine procedure after one en gine went dead and a second "momentarily lost power." Walts said the passengers were told to ! don life jackets and to take off their shoes as a precaution, but added he had not actually planned ' to ditch the plane. 1 Alexander N Goulandris, one of the passengers, described the trip as "four hours of hectic" flight in which "we were alerted for a ditch at any moment. We wore bfe jackets and took off our shoes. All emergency doors were open. Goulandris is vice president of the United Operations Shipping Agencies Corp.. New York City. The passengers arrived in Tokyo on the troubled plane this morn ing seven hours late. A U S Coast Guard plane met the Stratocruiser off Wake Island and tailed it until it landed. July It-Local em ployment opportunities will remain fairly low the next month, it has been disclosed through Charles Wilson, manager of the Lebanon of fice of the Oregon State Employ ment Service. Wilson, however, pointed out that agricultural work will be plentiful during the summer months. Retail trade employment re mained about the same during the month of June as that of the same period a year ago.
