By EVE STARR ' HOLLYWOOD, Nov. 15-STARR REPORT: It is the ambition of every comedian to play Hamlet. but . it's not every comedian who geta a chance to do it. When be does get it, it doesnt always c o m e off as well aa be had so fondly dreamed. The chance cam ' to the least likely prospect of all last week when Red Skelton did a play called Th Big Slide," on "Playhouse 90." To watch Skelton, on or off camera, is to get the impression he hasn't a serious brain in his head. Most ' comics are pretty serious fellows off stage (Jack Benny can be downright mourn ful), but Skelton is a happy-go- U.S. Orders Milk Illness Check in India WASHINGTON.. Nov. 13 UTh-An Investigation of powdered milk distributed by CARE in. a large school feeding program In Ceylon was ordered Wednesday by Wash ington officials of, the private American welfare organization. Mrs. Olive Clapper, director of CARE headquarters here, said she learned from press dispatches of "very disturbing" reports that j school children in Ceylon were taken ill after drinking CARE milk. Dispatches from Colombo said Education ' Minister W. Dahana yake had ordered an Inquiry after bearing that an . U-year-oJd girl had died after drinking the milk. It seems all the more remark ale, then, that Skelton's perform ance in "The Big Slide" turned out to be one of the most moving, powerful and completely believable dramatic performances I have seen in seven-odd years of watch; ing television. The big secret of Skelton's per formance lies in his long training as a comedian his innate ability to underplay rather than overdo It. ' It's a trick many; dramatic stars never learn, but to Skel ton it's instinctive Jt.madethe difference between a good per formance and a brilliant one. There is already talk that RKO will buy "The Big Slide" and turn it into a motion picture. (Copyright 1956, General Features Corp.) GANG ATTACKS RUMORED NEW YORK, Nov. Of the nine members of the House Taxation Committee, only tnree will be available for the new committee. There also will be only two old Senate Ways and Means Commit tee members in the new Legisla ture. ine new legislature will con tain 11 lawyers in the House and 10 4n the Senaje and it looks as though the usual shortage of law yers is over. There also will.be 20 farmers in the House and six in the Senate. Only Eltht Back Of the 22 House committee chairmen in 1953, only eight will be back, compared with nine of the 20 Senate committee 'chair men. . Another illustration of the short age of experience in the House is the fact that only four of the 60 members have served more than two sessions. Rep. Herman H..Chindgren, Molalla Republican, is the dean, with 12 sessions. Three men have served in three Legislatures.
