Laborer Bound Over on Charge Of Knife Wielding DALLAS-Walter Wilbur Phillips, 22, Independence area farm labor er, was bound over to the Polk County grand jury this week after waiving preliminary hearing on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon ronce saia me cnarge was maae against the man Saturday night after a pocket knife was pulled on an officer in the Independence po lice station. The incident reportedly followed investigation of a report of unruliness in an Independence tavern. Phillips was lodged in Polk County Jail here under $2,000 bail. Construction of the school was t originally scheduled for this sum mer, but the board decided to give priority to addition projects at Four Corners, Morningside, Middle Grove and Washington schools where growth problems were an ticipated. Present plans call for construc tion next year on a site between 22nd and 23rd streets near Market Street. Preliminary plans for the T-classroom and library structure have been completed by Salem Architect James L. Payne and will be considered by the board Thurs day night. Dealer Wary City Planners Weigh YW's Alley Name Problems How to help the YWCA skirt around an "alley door" designation of Its west entrance is one of the problems Salem Planning Com mission tried to solve Tuesday night at City Hall. Salem teen agers use that entrance regularly for social affairs at the YWCA and ought to have something better to call it than the alley door, the commission heard by letter from Mrs. Robert Sprague, chairman of the YWs Teen Age Committee. She suggested the name "Y Way" or "Tele-Y Lane" be given the alley between the YW and the telephone building on State Street Fear Maay Requests Alley naming hasn't confronted the planners in recent years, and street naming never turns out to be quite as simple as it might ap pear to a layman. Perhaps with this in mind, the commissioners responded somewhat gingerly to the YW request. Cily Engineer J. H. Davis hoped an alley name here wouldn't re open "a siege" of former years when many neighborhoods wanted alleys named after flowers plant ed uniformly along back property lines. Commissioner Urlin Page sug gested a special committee might be needed to consider the YW plan. Commissioner John Carkin favored quicker action: "If they want Y-Way, Y-not?" Postal Puzzle Possible Planning Engineer C. A. McClure wondered if naming the alley would lead to requests for new postal addresses and Commission er Robert K. Powell suggested the city manager be consulted for a statement of city policy. Someone suggested if the YW went ahead With an unofficial name of its own making, then; they could change it at will in the future. Result Tuesday night: The YW request was referred to Commis sioner Stuart Compton's streets and traffic committee, along with two proposals for vacation of street sections where former rail road crossings have been closed, and along with some ot the other city problems at hand. YMCA Camp Pool Near Completion The Salem YMCA's new con crete swimming pool at Camp Sil ver Creek is expected to be com pleted about July 1, General Secre tary Gus Moore said Tuesday. The pool, being built from donat ed labor, materials and funds, will be used in the YM's annual camp ing programs. It will replace a small lake which has provided swimming facilities in other years. Moore said the new pool will be more suitable for swimming in struction because the water won't be so cold. The project is 60 feet lone and its widest point is 40 feet. Brewster, Salem, state DAV commander said Tuesday night. This year's meeting will be a joint venture with the Women's Auxiliary of the DAV, Brewster said. Resolutions for consideration by the delegates concerning vari ous benefits to disabled veterans Will occupy a major portion of .the convention. Today's meeting, however, will be chiefly social, after the 1 p.m. registration. There will be a memorial service in the First Presbyterian church at 7:30 p.m. followed bv an exe cutive committee meeting at the hotel jt v p.m. The convention slogan is "It's Easy to Remember," reflecting the group's concern with fading public interest in "essential re habilitation of disabled veterans." Douglas McKay Republican candidate for the U. S. Senate, is expected to speak during one of the convention meetings, Brew ster said. McKay is a lifetime member of the Salem's DAV chapter.
