Chicago. JFor Judy herself ran second. second to an uneven script, routine direc tton - and re- marbnhlv nnor V'i.v " .-.? color produc- ran second to a costume designer who should be shot at dawn. This first CBS "spectacular" never got spectacular until its last five t minutes when Judy , broke her heart, and everyone else's trying to fight her way through "Over the Rainbow" with no voice and no breath. The ovation she received from a VIP studio audience watching the show on monitors in an adjoin ing studio was a tribute to her courage mope than anything else. The show got off to a bad start right off the hat whea Judy made her first appearance ia a loose fitting gawa that made ber look like a tab of butter. In fact, the stadia audience gasped. Oa tep of that, she had m voice. Laryngitis had eaaght ap with her the' day before the shew. A trouper like Garland eaa talk her way through a song and get away with it. but anfortuaately several of her umbers had beea pre-recorded and the audience was thus faced with the uncom fortable punier of hearing her sing like a bird one minute and croak like a crow the nest. Judy s biggest assist came from David Wayne, a pixie-like lad whose "Actor Cat" number was a show stopper, and from a group of Jive zany musicians called TheGoofers. Judy her self, one of the greatest' stars of show business, never stopped the show until it was almost over, but those last five minutes add ed up to one of the great bits of TV history. All things con sidered, however, it was a pret ty expensive five minutes Color TV has rarely been done sack a disservice. I watched the show aa two sets, color and black and white, placed along side one another. Instlactirely, I found myself watching a good 80 per cent of It on the black-and-white set. The color was predominantly dull ; green and raage, and simply failed to add anything to the production. It was a better show la black-and-white. Bat on either set, it was a keea disappointment.
