So say leading authorities in the construction industry and they, ought to know! : The increasing demand for more and more air conditioning is causin? these same builders to be more Conscientious than ever in seeing to it that new residen tial structures are properly in sulated. For. they say (as do manufacturers of air condition ing equipment,) adequate insula tion is absolutely necessary for proper air conditioning. -la a bulletin on tne auDject, The National Association of Home Builders says: "Proper in sulation will reduce cooling costs just as effectively as it reduces heating costs." In Agreement I Authorities unanimously agree that whether the home is under construction or already' built, it should be fully and correctly in sulated if it is tq get the most it ii economically, oui oi lis air con ditioning system. The concensus of opinion seems to be that it is less expensive to liuuiaie properly. then use a smaller re frigeration plant, than to install the larger equipment needed in an uninsulated house. Test Prove Need for Insnltion That proper insulation is an important factor in keeping air conditioning operating expenses to a minimum is proved by a test conducted recently on a one story house with approximately 1,300 ft. of floor space. Without insulation, it was found that nearly 4-tons was needed to give adequate cooling. When walls and ceiling were insulated, the required load dropped to 2.60 tons. In short, it took half again the load to cool the non-insulated house. Similar results were ob tained in tests of two - story houses. This is the nearly finished home of F. E.. Pulse at 1075 Electric Ave. which was 're modeled from a small one-bedroom house (shown above) already on the property. The remodeling job included addition of two bedrooms and expansion of the living room. Do-It-Yourself Projects Still Gaining Headway In American Way of Life Do-it-yourself is no longer a fad, but an American way of life. Past records show that fads usually last three years. "Do-it- yourself has been steadily grow ing for over 12 years and is ex pected to expand further for an other five years. An asphalt tile flooring company pioneered the idea in 1942. Sime of the basic reasons why "do-it-yourself will continue to grow are: 1, The average homeowner needs repairs, remodeling and modernization due to natural wear and tear, and community pres sure. Current high rates for home repair work impell him to do it himself. 2. The 4CXhour week, plus long er vacations give more leisure timer Added Incentive 3. The trend for middle-income families to move from city apart ments to suburban homes gives extra opportunity and incentive to do their own home repairs. 4. Home improvement loan re gulations stimulate major do-it-yourself projects. 5. More and more living space is needed as new home construc tion fails to keep pace with popu lation growth. ' 0. Higher wage level has raised living standards. 7. New households are .being formed at a rate of over a million annually. 8. The development of new materials and improvement of traditional ones, are making home repair and remodeling much easi er tor tne average man. 9. In this nation of "tinkerers " forgotten skills are being re-dis covered. While improving their homes, people are actually having fun! 10. Young people of marrying age today grew up during ' this trend and take it as a matter of course they should do their own home repairs. 11. The development of tele vision and its popularity has meant a renewed emphasis on the home. 12. Early retirement finds many capable people with leisure time. Social Security pensions have helped increase their buying pow- 13. The American white collar worker has been convinced that he must have some bobby for re laxation. This has brought an in crease of hobby centers and home workshops for both men and women.-. 11 Educators are encouraging training in carpentry or other skills for adolescents. Since the "do-it-yourself move ment is healthful psychologically, saves money is a necessity in many communities and raises the standard of living it has plenty of reasons for continued strong popularity.
