Atomic stocks, which have been scoring Vide gains in recent days, were hammered sharply. Some dropped 10 cents. All sections of the market were involved in the selloff which in cluded losses of 1 to around 4 points frequently: The Associated Press average, of 60 stocks was down $1.80, biggest fall in 24 weeks. The average closed at $158.50. Since mid-March the market has been rising stead ily in a recovery from the severe reaction that started March 7. Even Wednesday the average isn't far from the historic peak of $162.60 established March 4. Wheat closed 1 H lower to 1 H higher", corn unchanged , to s lower, oats - lower, rye ,i lower to 4 higher, soybeans ? to 2 cents lower and lard 5 cents lower to 3 cents a hundred pounds higher. Demand for May wheat came primarily from a large local traderr It was not believed to rep resent short covering. The buying presumably was based on the be lief ' wheat supplies in the free market will be scarce before the new crop starts coming to market. New crop wheat futures firmed shortly after issuance of the mid-1 day weather forecast, showing no moisture was expected in the dry areas of the winter wheat belt.
