Byron Janis, young American pianist will appear at North Sa lem High School auditorium as second in the Salem Community Concert association attractions on Friday, January 14. Younf Janis, born in Pittsburgh, made his debut at Carnigie Hall in hit tinm ' town ivhpn hut nine years old. He was thereupon em barked on a musical career In earnest. x At the age of 13 Byron Janis appeared as soloist with the NBC Symphony under Dr. Frank Black, end did a series of nationwide broadcasts on the network. Since then be has appeared with many great orchestras including those of New York. Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Min neapolis and others. Janis toured South America in IMS and in Europe several times. He is married to the former June Dickson Wright of London, daugh ter of i well known London sur geon. Ckadwick Charter, OES SmUI Club will meet at the Masonic Temple for a dessert lueheon Tues day afternoon at 1:15 p.m. Orchestra to Be Heard in Concert Here North Salem High School on Tues day night at 8 o clock by the Port land Symphony Orchestra is the only symphony concert listed for Salem this season. Highlight of the performance is' the presence of Igor Stravinsky, Russian-born composer, whd directs the orches tra in a program made up entirely of bis own works. One of the greatest composers of the 20th century, Stravisnky was once a pupil of Rimsky-Korsa-koff. Probably his best-known com position is the Fire Bird Suite, which he Includes in the Tuesday program. Also listed for playing are other favorites Petroushka and Le sacre du Prin tempi. Rubinoff to Play Violin in Salem Dn the music Calender for Jan uary, is the concert of Rubinoff, violinist, which is being sponsored by the Downtown Salem Kiwanis dub at North Salem High School audaitorium January 28. The con cert is to be given for the bene fit of the Kiwanis Boys' and Girls' Fund. The famed musician will bring here for his concert the Stradivar ius violin which, insured for $100, 000, is reputed to possess the most beautiful tonal -qualities in the world; and a brand new program of famous favorites loved by peo ple everywhere, such as Warsaw Concerto.
