" " a 1 South Saxons Win , 6841 Contest j Southerners Notch Sixth Straight Win Coach Dick Ballantyne's South Salem Saxons notched victory - number six on their tally sticks as they steamrolled over the Hills- boro Spartans 68-41 last night in Salem, and Bob Wulf. Saxon cen ter had a field night tallying 23 of the sixty-eight counters in the last game of 1954. The Spartans opened play by bitting a quick swisher from the key, but that was , the extent of : their lead in the game as the Saxes surged back with fast points by -Burkland and Foreman to put South Salem into a lead they didn't relinquish. The first period of play was the only period that Hillsboro was in the game score- : wise as they tallied 9 to Salem's 14 points. Phil Burkland, Saxon forward, proved difficult to guard and to , stop as he rolled up 18 counters ; himself. Spartan forward Oeorge Rushlow trying to .guard Burk- land, found himself benched early (Continued Next Page) -i -1 " Vikings Lose In Overtime GRESHAM (Special) The G:aai.i High Gopher won an overtime thriller from the visiting North Salem Vikings here Tues day night, 68-65. The Vikings put on a great second-half here after looking rather ragged in the first two quarters to play. ! Erratic passing and other mis takes by North Salem worked well into the plans of the fast-breaking Gophers in the first half. Gresh am led at the end of the first quarter, 15-5, then increased their lead to a 32-21 edge at the half time. Starting the second half , with the Gophers ahead by 11 points, the Vikings put on a scoring drive that knotted the game at 48-all when the quarter ended. The lead see-sawed back and forth in the final quarter and end ed with a 62-62 tie at the end of regular playing time. In the over time period. North Salem's Marv Rhine scored three points on a field goal and foul shot, but the six points by Gresham more than matched it Bob Graham scored two free throws and a field goal for Gresh am in the overtime period to help the victory. High point honors went to Cliff Shelton with 23 points. Second place was. tied between the Vik ings' Rhine with 19 and Wood ford, also with 19. North Salem's Bee team won the prelim, 69-61. It was close all the way. Dallas leading 12-10 at the end of the first period and Corvallis holding a slight edge of 22-18 and 32-30 at the end of the next two quarters. Neal Kinion, Corvallis center, topped all scorers in the pre liminary to the Oregon State Seattle U. game with 12 points. High for Dallas were Bob Helmer and Bud Long with eight each. . The tight contest kept the vic tory margin weaving between the two teams until near the finish of the last quarter.
