A musty odor spread upward Neighbourhood Relaxes After Chemical Gone EVERETT (J Dr. and Mrs. T. W. Costello and the whole near by Sunnyside community breathed easier Tuesday. , Army ordnance disposal experts had gingerly hauled away the Cos tellos 420 pounds of poisonous cal cium phosphide.- V The heroes in the touchy drama (to the Costellos and their neigh bors) were Mai. Werner Dinte- man of the 552nd Explosive Ord ttarce Disposal Control Detach ment, of Ft Lewis, and bis crew Major Dinteman is the Army's chief disposal officer for the four Northwest states. Proper removal of the deadly chemical had baffled the Everett Fire Department and Snohomish County Civil Defense officials. The compound reacts violently, with spontaneous fire and poison gas, chemists said, when exposed to either air or water and the metal "containers were already rusted. Everett Asst. Fire Marshall Hills Collins said the wooden cases in Dr. Costello's garage and base ment bore evidence, of former Navy ownership. Somehow they were sold as war surplus and Dr Costello, who thought the chemical might be used to tan leather and he might resell it, acquired it a few years ago. . He did not learn until this month the potential danger and his ap peals for aid brought the sugges tion he get in touch with experts The Army crew will neutralize the cnemical and throw it on the ordnance dump at Ft. The long j closed gallery was opened with the removal of a huge limestone slab, from the forward end of the sand-buried, rock-cut drydock in which , the boat of the Pharaoh lies. , For the first time it became possible to see the full length of the gracefully fashioned craft, one of a type in which Egypt's ancient rulers believed their souls would be borne through the heavens to the kingdom of the gods. - The bow of the craft was di rectly beneath the opening from which the first stone was removed. It was gently rounded in an up ward curve and finely carved. At its extremity, the bow was orna mented with a carved lotus blos som, the floral emblem of ancient Egypt The solar boat was revealed to be an uncommonly shaped ves sel. 114 feet long and about four feet wide at its center beam. It was perfectly symmetrical. and sleekly tapered fore and aft It was constructed entirely of brown cedar wood which the an cient Egyptians brought from, the mountains of Phoenicia, now Lebanon. The wood had darkened through the ages to a rich mahogany shade. First inspection of the craft re vealed not a single sign of decay. Gen. Robertson Dies in California SAN FRANCISCO . Maj. Gen. Asks for Clarification The report that McCarthy had undergone an "operation" . drew from a hospital spokesman last night the brief statement that "no surgical operative procedure" had been performed on the senator. The statement seemed to leave open the possibility that doctors bad probed - the elbow for pieces of glass but that they did not regard this as a "surgical procedure. In response to requests for' fur ther details and clarification,, the hospital's executive office Tuesday issued the following statement: "Sen. McCarthy . continued to show improvement on Monday, a small amount of fluid was re moved from the bursa of his right elbow which is filled with a fluid which helps to prevent friction in movements of the joint." Hospital aides said th.it drawing out some of this fluid with a hy podermic needle is a recognized treatment for 'bursitis, ' which is a condition in ' which the bursa becomes inflamed . from a blow or other cause.
