Richard Boone's bedside manner would come up to his table-side manner he should hang out his shingle at once. He s 185 pounds of very rugged fellow, and a pleasantly smooth personality with which to have lunch at the Derby. We settled down with the TV doc and Ann McCall and Bill Eddy of his public relations staff to talk shop. Richard was slightly on the defensive. "All of the 'Medic series won't be blood . and thunder, you know," he said in that sturdy j voice which was actually what landed him in Hollywood. "We've got some highly interesting stories on seriatrics comine uo and th treat ment oi hemophilia. Less gory subjects like that" The first deals with the creeping years and a family's adjustments to an acing member. The other, of course, is a morbid ailment of the : bloodstream which has to do With imorooer coagulation. Prettv deep stuff, tut not too deep for Richard, who's put in plenty of hours at the General. Good Samaritan and Pasadena hospitals learning nis , Aieaic trade. Gus took our orders and wished Boone a happy landing. As captain at the Derby Gus sees all and knows all about the enter tainment world, including Boone's take-off next day for Durango, Mexico, to shoot a new motion picture. The Derby had under gone some changes while we were in New York, new bar. red A . a !H a. 1 1 a a " veivei carpet, magnmcem overneaa miures, out uus always re mains the same, right there at the right moment with the right thing. , ' ; j- 'The 'Medic', is the result of a Jot of hard work, isn't tt?" toe remarked about Richard' thorough preparation. "A lot. But worth it to make the series absolutely authentic. I patterned my role after our own family physi cian, a man I've admired since childhood." "It's so authentic," Ann volunteered, "that hundreds of ' fans have trritten, in to Richard for medical aduice. Which he can't -give, of course." i , If Boone knows his doctoring, he knows Wis acting as tcelt. . j j "Oh, about 15CT TV shows," he answered, "since I first tried television in '48." And a flock of movies, too, including "Drag- net," for which that perfectionist Jack Webb chose Boone to be : Joe Friday's boss. ' He fitted the stern role well, possibly due to . his stern background. A boxer at college, a roustabout in-the ' oil fields, a member of a charter fishing craft's crew. And this could- make him a romantic character, too. How about that? "Is there going to be anything like romance in the 'Medic' stories?" we asked. "You know a little variety, i Maybe even a funny situation?" j "Romance?" Boone frowned his craggy frown. "I'd kind of like that. It might round out the human interest.. We'll see." "We've already, had the funny situation," said Bill Eddy. "You have?" We were surprised. "When was that?" j Boone laughed. "I think Bill means we were filming our pilot: I was the doc doing a Caesarean section you remember. And at that very hour my wife was presenting me with a son down in Santa Monica. And by Caesarean section! But you'd better not mention that No one would believe such a story." It is an awfully long arm of coincidence so we won't say a word about it j ; HOLLYWOOD TELECOMMUNICATIONS; The guy with the wiggly eyebrows and that black, cigar will be the surprise guest on the Nov. 18, "Shower of Stars." You'll also be seeing Betty Gr able, Harry James and Ed Wynn tcho toill headline this presentatton. . . . Word just came that the next Jack Webb motion picture for Warner's rolls in early spring. It's "Pete Kelly's Blues," and the cast will spend a week, in New Orleans on location. ... "The Lung- fiih. the Dodo and the Unicorn," authored by scientist-lec turer and outstanding space and rocket authority Willy Ley, who is one of the three famous consultants on the new Walt Disney telefilmed series, just arrived tn the mailbag this morning. It's an excursion into romantic zoology and prom ises to be enjoyable reading. . . . John Cameron Swayze and his charming wife arrived In Hollywood along with the most welcome and refreshing breeze that seems to be clearing that ole debbil smog away, at least temporarily, so we're trotting right over to the Beverly Hills Hotel to bid them welcome and so what's new? ... At the same tim we've a telezram that reads: "We're invited to view the first revolutionary pocket radio weighing 12 ounces and using transistors instead! of tubes and to meet Mr. Edward Tudor and Bud Harris, the men who designed and created the miniature set" How will we do both? W-e-H, we just hook on our space wings and awav we eo! '. . Hillbilly songstress Dorothy Shay, now ap pearing at the Hotel Statler's Terrace Room, will guest on Red Skelton's November 23 teleshow. Her special nightclub material has such talents as Jane Powell,- Connie Haines, Dinah Shore and ConnietRussell applauding from ringside. . . . Tab Movpmber 28 "Hall of Fame" telecast You'll be privileged to see Maurice Evans and Judith Anderson in Shakespeare's im- mortal "Macbeth." . . .
