Gains amounted to $1 to nearly $5 a share in many instances in key areas. AIL major divisions of the market advanced There were few laggard sections. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks advanced $2.60. That gain tops any single day since Sept 5, 1939. at the beginning of World War IL On that day the average jumped ahead $3.50. Wednesday the average closed at $137.30, only 10 cents under the 1984 peak' which was the highest Since Oct. 18, 1929. The industrial component of the average was up $4.20, the rails were ahead $1.30, and the utilities in an unusually buoyant display of strength added '$1.10.' In early deals there was little decisive trend as traders tried to4 assay the effects of election chang es.
