' We were fortunate in cornering Mary tt Mike Romanoffs the day before she took off for Honolulu and found her enthused about many things. "A whole month's vacation," she beamed. J "The whole family and a house on the beach.1 That meant hubby and her little boy and girL It also meant 30 days' rest from what's been a very fast schedule for "My Friend Irma" and her Gildersleeve radio spot Mike slid in beside us to complete a foursome and state his own crse. Jerry Conway wa along from CBS press relations on general principle. Mike s case proved a bit lopsided. . , "I, too, am embarking upon a vacation," he an nounced, the pouches beneath his eyes being no indica tion bf a need for same. Mike always looks like that. 1 "To New York jor Independence Day. And to celebrate our tredding anniversary too." "Isn't that a rather strange combination?" asked Mary. "Independence on the one hand and a lack of it on the other?" ' Mike agreed. He's always agreeable. He also agreed that Mary had been doing a fine job on the "Irma" show. She'd better. She's married to an executive of - CBS, uJhich network "Afy Friend Irma." "How do you and Marie Wilson shape up a show?n we .wanted to know. "You must sort of get together and hash things' out in advance of rehearsals." j ' "We da And it's lots of fun. We especially work out what well wear and how we'll do our hair. And, of course, we discuss the more important scenes.?" "And how's 'Mr. Clyde doing? we inquired. That's Irma's boss, of course, the very excellent Donald McBride. "We've heard his leg was suddenly better." ! Mary nodded soberly. "Actually, he nearly lost it And then, almost jover night,' these miracle drugs saved it We were all tremendously relieved - So . were we. We'd hate to have anything happen to the likeable, always exasperated Mr. Clyde. "Anef what's happened to 'Richard Rhinelander 111'?" we continued, 'Your mamaVboy boy-friend on the show?" j j ' "Oh," laughed Mary. "He was lots of fun. He'll be back in the series after awhile. That's Brooks West, you know, married to Eve Arden. Swell guy." "Do you ever hanker for a deeply dramatic role?" we asked. Mary has been playing lighter things ever , since, at .17, she dressed tip like a 13-year-old and won the Becky Thatcher role for "Adventures of Tom Saw yer" She's been Henry Aldrich's girl friend, as well as Howard Duff's in the forerunner of radio's "Sam Spade." "I'd like to do something heavy for shows like Lux Theater," Mary admitted. "But jthere just never seems to be time to get at such things." ' !' j "Maybe after your vacation," we suggested. "You'll be all rested up and ready to go." - "Yes," smiled Mary. "For another TV series,; that's all cut and ready to roll. 'Sob Sister,' it is, a newspaper woman .role on a five-a-week basis. Don Martin has written it as an enlargement on my present newspaper jactiuity on the 'Irma' show." This-was news. And another indication' f the busy schedule constantly set for this glamorous and clever girL . ' -."Sounds like you're -coming back to. start building up right away for the need for another vacation,", we observed. "But we'll bo looking forward to your debut" - "Actually, I will too,"; smiled i Mary. "I'm ready, for a rest now. But I know I'll be just as eager to dig into this new role. It sounds exciting and different . And that's probably what keeps Mary striving for the top a rest for. the work which is crowding her all the time. She's earned a few basks on Waikiki And a few scoops of pot Aloha, Mary, until "Sob Sister" comes our way. "'- j (Copyright, 1954. Gnrl Tetur Corp.) c K ' KPTV Smtarday Highlit bU: - J:M jn.
