VYv WASHINGTON U i- A report that an AWOL Air Force sergeant was enroute here armed with a high-powered rifle to tell congress men his grievances against the military set off an excited police alert Tuesday. I j Capitol guards set a watch about senators and House members from Florida and New York, since ithe airman was said to live alternately in those two states. He was Re ported driving a 1952 auto bearing Florida licenses. s j Officials at Westover Air FOrce Base, Mass., identified the missing airman as M. Sgt. Victor Petoriiak, 43, a; veteran of 24 years service. They I said he left the base without permission several days ago while s undergoing observation at the base hospital." The officers said Petoniak known to own a high-powered but they didn't know whethef he had it with him. ! Capitol police said the Air Force reported that Petoniak called And rews Field in nearby Maryland this afternoon to say he wal en route here. He was rquoted as saying he wanted to see his sena tors and congressmen to tryj and . get something done about "certain ' grievances." j Special alerts were sounded at all entrances to the Capitol and j the Senate and House office build ings. A search of the grounds? was made too, but ' by time business for the day ended, no one answer ing Petoniak's description had turned up. ! Daily World Official Fired SEATTLE un . Terry Pettus, Northwest editor of the People's Daily World and under sentence to the federal penitentiary! - for Communist-conspiracy, has been fired from his job on the paper. Pettus admitted Tuesday hi had been ousted but refused to! dis cuss the reason except to say they were "not political" or personal The 49-year-old admitted Com munist is one of five Communists sentenced last October to 5 fears in prison after being convicted of conspiracy to teach and advbeate theoverthrow of the government by force and violence. The paper has carried almost continual series of appeals for funds to aid the de fense of the five convicted Com munists, all of whom are out on bail. j i Bomb Theory Advanced inj Jetliner Crash LONDON lit) A time bomb may have been placed aboard the British ; Comet jet airliner which crashed in the Mediterranean; Jan. 10, Civil Aviation Minister ! Alan Lennox-Boyd said Tuesday night Lennox-Boyd, returning from an on-the-spot probe of the crash, told reporters he did not waht to "align" himself with such a theory but: ; "Considering the medical evi dence, it is a possible interpreta tion of what might have occurred." The crash killed all 33 persons aboard the comet. f Doctors participating in the in quiry on Elba, near the I crash scene, have noted that the 15 bod ies recovered had burns on the legs which could have been caused by an explosion. ! Lord Reading, minister of state for foreign affairs,! told the House of Lords that British businessmen wanting to discuss trade in goods" would be given all -proper faculties in the government s pow er to cet to China. t Reading's pledge made in reply to questions from members of the House, apparently is part of a new orosram designed to push this country's trade with Communist nations.
