Fast-Talking Pitchmen Irksome to T-Viewers By EVE STARR HOLLYWOOD The greatest evil being perpetrated on the American viewing public today is the pitchman the hard-breathing, fast-talking gimmick salesman, lineal descendant of the first man to conceive the happy idea of selling the B..Atl.m T-ot A im n ril ttlflllAMM In . JXUUaijrjl 011UCt 11C la ji.imi.iiv . more ways than one, for he not only plies his . larcenous trade before the public but is double crossing the station as well. j His wares are almost invariably of the gim crack variety. He offers them for the low, low price of $1.69, and will throw in for absolutely free, a $39.50 diamond-studded watch to the first 25 viewers who call in to place an order. No matter how fast you call, 25 other people, all fictitious, have rotten in ahead of you. If he sells used cars, his big feature of the evening is a 1953 convertible with low, low mileage.; at an absolutely unbelievable price. Get down to his lot by 10 a. m. the next morning and you'll find that the convertible has already leen sold. Get there at 6 a. ra. or at midnight or even, before he's finished talking. The car, of course has just been sold 4 minutes before, BUT here's another that's almost as good a bargain. More mileage, of course, and a slightly higher price say $1,000 higher but still a terrific bar gain. As for the stations which specialize in these pitchmen thev're ramdlu cuttina their own throats. The .American public disillusions very quickly. Burn a citizen once and he j save what might become a histori doesnt forget which end of the stick s the hot one. The station which is turning over a fast dollar with its pitchmen today is tossing the long range dollars right out the window. "Caveat emptor" is a fine old Latin phrase, meaning "let the buyer beware." In these times, however, the shoe is on the other foot. Let the seller beware. Americans today tend to have long long memories. Low point In the life of this 112-year-old house came Saturday when it was sold by Auctioneer Claude Kilgore (on porch) to wreckers for $35 to make room for the new school administration building at 13th and Ferry Streets. But this, Salem's second oldest house originally a pioneer Methodist par sonage may yet be saved as a museum if efforts of the Marion County Historical Society to raise . funds for moving and restoration succeed. Drive to Save Old Parsonage Gains Speed Heartened by a pledge of $500 toward a fund to restore Salem's second oldest house, the Marion County Historical Society this week is making renewed eff6rts to arouse public interest in the project. Dr. Burt Brown Barker of Port land, who owned the building for some years after he inherited it from his father. William C. Bar ker of Salem, has begun a pub lic subscription with $500. In a letter to Hugh Morrow, president of the Hostorical Society, Barker expressed confidence that the citi zens ot Salem would rally to Godfrey SKETCHBOOK: Jack Webb, well known to TV-radio audiences as Sgt. Joe Friday in NBC's "Dragnet," is one of the industry's enterprising young business men (only 33) and a great talent As a businessman be masterminds Dragnet Productions, Dragnet Enterprises and Mark VII Ltd. As a talent he is the creator, director and star of the documentary series. Back from a stint in the Army Air Corps as &' pilot, Webb first clicked as "Pat Novak for Hire" in a radio show ema nating from San Francisco. He teas the rave of Pacifie Coast private eye fans. But the job didn't last for Webb. He left the Bay City and came to Hollywood with "Dragnet" in hie mind. In June 1948, the police' package went on the air. In January of 1952, it hit the video screens across the nation via NBC. Jack appeared in some movies and then introduced . unsuccessfully - . . "Pete Kelly's Blues." It was a dramatic show with a "roaring twenties" background. The raves were great but the audience acceptance was nil . . . no sponsors, no show. But the perseverance of Jack Webb u-as nothing to he taken lightly. Late this summer he will start filming "Pete Kelly's Blues" for TV, and later "Pat Novak." his first claim to favie. J cal shrine Plea Sent Out " Mimeographed copies of Dr. Barker's long letter arguing for preservation of the Parsonage will be sent by the Society to al members of the Salem Parks Ad visory Board and other city offi cials, Morrow said Monday. He said the Society will ask the Board to reconsider earlier pro posals to relocate the Parsonage on Marion Square. In his state ment, Barker had suggested the house be moved there, restored, "surrounded by a simple white picket fence and bordered by flower beds and cared for at lit tle expense by those who care for the parks." Could Be Replica Morrow believes the Parsonage could be made into an exact replica of a pioneer home a cen tury ago perhaps the only such building in the state. The house originally was a par sonage for the Methodist mission aries who founded Salem and Willamette University. It was built in 1841 under the supervis ion of the Rev. Gustavua Hines who arrived in Oregon on the ship Lausanne in 1840. The Par sonage, the Jason Lee house, and the Oregon Institute (laterWil lamette) formed the nucleus of Salem and as the sole member remaining nearly in original form the Parsonage "should be pre served at all costs," Dr. Barker said. , How the people of Salem feel about the project now is of imme diate concern to the Society.
