The Statesman, Salem, Prow Saturday. April II, IS 53 9 Ben in Charge By One Stroke Hamilton Rnnnerup, Herbert Fades to 3rd By HUGH FUIXEKTON Jr. AUGUSTA, Ga UV-Ben Hogan, the grim little golfer who once had a Master's Tournament ded icated to him, took charge of an other Masters Friday as he shot his way into the lead at the 36 hole mark. Hogan, followed by a tremen dous week-day gallery of 8,000, put a round of 69 on top of a first day 70 for a two-day total of 139. That's five strokes under par for Augusta National, the spacious and soul-testing course in the red clay hills of East Georgia. Augusta's par, always hard to beat is 38-36-72 for the 6,900 yard layout. At the end of play in the sec ond round, which started in a thunderstorm and ending in bright sunshine, Hogan had Just a one-stroke margin over the portly Evansville, Ind., veteran. Bob Hamilton, and two over Chick Harbert of Detroit, the first-day leader, and Chunky Ted Xroll of New Hartford, N. Y. Gallery likes Ben But, except for a few moments of suspense when the fans wait ed to see if Hamilton could over take their, favorite, no one doubt ed that it was Ben's day. The whole mob took out after him when word got around that, he was scorching the front nine with a four-under-par 32. That was where Hogan got in his best licks. He got his, first birdie of the day on the fifth hole, where defending , champion Sam Snead started to shoot him self out of the picture. Hogan also birdied the sixth, eighth and ninth with deadly iron shots. Tied at 142 were ex-open cham, pion, Lloyd Mangrum, who shot a 68 for the day's best round: ro tund Ed Oliver of Palm Springs, Calif., and Milton Marusic, a lean, unemployed and virtually unknown pro from Herkimer. N. Y. Snead, who shot a 70 Thursday and only got credit for a 71 be cause of a mixup on the scorecard he signed, couldn't control his wood shots Friday and wound up with 73 for a 146 total. That doesn't put him clear out, for he won last year with a 286 total that included a round of 77, but he s on the edge. Major Loops Set to Start fContd. from previous page) Spencer cam to the Giants as a highly heralded shortstop, but had to settle for third when he failed to more Alvin Dark off that position. Bobby Thomson, who played a lot of third base for the Giants in 1951-52, will . open the season in center field. The Cincinnati Reds, starting second baseman most likely will be Rocky Bridges, who came up to the Dodgers several years ago as a shortstop and was used as a handy man in the infield for two seasons. Pete Suder, a regular second baseman for the Phila delphia Athletics for a .dozen years until he lost the job to Cass Michaels last year, will be at third next Tuesday. Remember Jimmy PiersalL who opened the 1952 season as the regular Boston Red Sox short stop after coming up from Birm Ingham rated the best defensive outfielder in the minors? He's ; back in the outer gardens, sta tioned in right field this season. At second will be Billy Goodman, who at one time or another, has played every position for the Red Sox except pitcher and catcher. Look and Learn By A. C Gordon 1.
