IP Th. Slatman, SaUm, Virus Grown As Early Test for Polio; May Aid in Preventing Paralysis r Br ALTON L. BLAKE SUEE - AP Science Reporter CHICAGO UP) Polio virus give an early test for polio, perhaps in time to prevent paralysis, scientists reported Thursday. Done in test tubes, it's another important step against polio. Dramatically it finds cancer, the the crippler. In 24 to 72 hours, the tests can show whether a person is har boring polio virus in his body, before it has started invading nerves. This knowledge might give time to use gamma globulin or a vaccine to. protect the ner ves, or to warn a person to take it easy to avoid serious nerve damage. Test for Gamma Globulin The tests also might be used to learn which people already have anti-bodies against one or an three types of polio virus. This could pintpoint those who needed a shot of gamma globulin or a vaccine for protection. The discovery is that a strain of cancer cells, kept growing in test tubes, will permit rapid growth of polio virus. To the test tube is added sample of bowel excretions of the human. If any polio virus was present in his intestines, it grows in the test tubes. Oils from Human Cancer The cancer cells used in the tests were obtained from a hu man cancer of the cervix at Johns Hopkins in 1951. It is a pure strain of cells which can be kept growing in definitely without any change Thousands of test tubes or cul tures containing it could be pre pared. This cancer strain will support growth of all three types of polio virus. Within 12 hours there is evidence that the virus is grow ing and within 72 hours the ori ginal amount of virus has in creased one million times. Thus the test could soon ten whether any person had polio virus. The virus apparently gets Into the intestines first, then in to the blood stream, and then attacks the nerves. Prevent Attack on Nerve If infection was detected be fore the virus entered the blood, then doctors perhaps could give gamma globulin, the antibody medicine from blood, in time to prevent an attack upon nerves. Polio virus has been isolated and identified from stool speci mens from more than 100 polio patients, Dr. Syverton said. Adding blood samples to test tubes containing the cancer cells Sjnd also adding one type of vi rus to each tube might show whether a person's blood already contained antibodies against each type of virus. If he had anti bodies in his blood, the virus wouldn't grow in the test tube. Liquor Board Clarifies Acts On Licensing PORTLAND in The State Liquor Commission clarified its earlier action Friday and report ed the 74 liquor by the drink li censes approved Thursday were not actually granted. Administrator William Baillie said the commission merely ten tatively cleared these 74 outlets for licenses, subject to final ap proval by the cities involved. The subject came up when the Portland City Council said the liquor commission put the council on the spot by approving the li censes.
