Lily Pons, world's most famous coloratura soprano Is scheduled for a Salem concert on Tuesday, March 17 in the Salem Community Concert series. Admission is by membership tiqket only, no seats are . sold at the door. - lily Pons, born in Cannes on the Riviera, was destined to become a concert pianist and by the age of 15 was well on the way to becom ing famous as a concert artist. But a two-year illness forced her to give up piano studies, and upon recovery, she helped entertain veterans of World War L After a piano program one day. she con sented to sing for the soldiers, and from then on this was her musical interest. . i She filled ingenue roles under the French director Max Dearly, later working under Albert! di Gorostiaga, and five years after starting under his guidance, she was on the Metropolitan Opera House stage, January. 1931r Since the marriage of Lily Pons and Andre Kostelanetz they have made many tours together,-among mem two long trips abroad to sing and play for troops. , Recently Miss Pons completed her fifth peace-time overseas concert tour with her husband. ; Miss Pons of course is known throughout the world as ' an opera singer, and well as a concert art ist, has appeared in movies and lately was on television with Bob Hope. ; -; On Miss Pons program for Shower Honors ! Square Dance Roundup Slated The third annual Willamette Valley Square Dance Roundup sponsored by the Capitol O Square dance club is to be held at the Sa lem Armory on Saturday.
