Ohmart, wife of Representative Ohmart, who has Around Town AlUYear Cooking Locally Grown Nuts Offer Many Chancos for Interesting Cooking By MAXTNE BTJREN , Statesman Woman's Editor We are great ones here for local products and every time we get some good recipes for using home-grown foods we like to Cass them on hoping to bolster up business for the farmers and at the same time make the ladies better cooks. i Here then is a collection of recipes using filberts, good for the holiday season, and excellent year-round food. Filberts are actually good nuts for cooking, they are high in flavor and not too expensive for frequent use as are some im ported nuts. m FILBERT TOPSY TURVY PUDDING . X tablespoon butter or margarine. cup sugar 1 cup flour v k teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon baking powder Cream the butter, then add gether dry ingredients. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with milk. Add chopped dates, filberts and vanilla. Pour into greased casserole. Add the following sauce: 4 cup brown sugar -. 1 tablespoon butter ; . . 1 cup hot water i Combine sugar and butter; add hot water and mix welL Pour ' over pudding batter and bake in moderate oven 350 for 30 to 33 minutes. Serve with sweet cream or whipped cream. Serves 6. " Crisp crackers, salted pretzels and fresh potato chips are ex , eellent accompaniments to serve with this cheese ball. Trim the ' , ball with sprigs of parsley or watercress. - V FILBERT CHEESE BALL : tt ounces blue cheese , - cup finely ground filberts S ounces cheddar cheese . cup finely chopped filberts (soft)'-.':---'"--''.-::' teaspoon Worcestershire ' " 1 3 -ounce package cream ; "sauce J . . . cheese v, - - 1 tablespoon grated onion ;.- ' Mix all ingredients except chopped filberts with electric mlx- ex, until well combined. Form Into ball in small bowl which has i - been lined with waxed paper. Let 'stand about 1 hour. Roll In finely chopped filberts. May stand in refrigerator overnight. Let i . stand at room temperature about 1 hour before serving. Serve v. with small crackers. Makes a ball about 4 inches in diameter.1 i I: . FILBERT. OATMEAL CRISP1ES ' 1 "' V : 14 cups rolled oats . . 1 egg - s . . 5y Y4 cup shortening " ,'. " ;. l cup. sifted flour - f "- V 1 cup sugar ,: ' 4 teaspoon salt .v - --. :-. 1 tablespoons molasses . Vt teaspoon soda ; 1 teaspoon vanilla cup chopped filberts Toast the rolled oats In a 350 degree oven for 10 minutes. Cream the shortening, sugar, molasses and vanilla. Add the egg. -Beat welL Add the sifted dry ingredients. Combine thoroughly. ' Stir in the toasted rolled oats and the filberts. Drop by teaspoon--fuls onto a greased cookie sheet. Minstrel Troupo Presents Shows A bus was chartered Friday eve ning to take the Minstrel Troupe of Marion Auxiliary to Post 861, Veterans of Foreign Wars, to Port land to present their show to the patients of the Veterans Adminis tration Tuberculosis Hospital. The presentation at the hospital was the start of the troupe's ac tivities for Community Service. January 21 and 22 the show will be given at the Fairview Home. A tentative date of February 13 has been set for the show at the State Penitentiary and on February 20 the troupe will again return to Portland to present their final show at the General Medicine and Surgery Hospital at the Veterans Administration. The troupe will be sponsored eta February 6 by the Middle Grove Associated Com munity Clubs. Mrs. Virgil Bolton is director of the show. The Dabblers will be entertained Thursday night at the home of Mrs. Maynard Nelson, 1155 N. 25th St., at 8 p. m. Co-hostessese will be Mrs. Norval Edwards and Mrs. J. J. Gallagher. Bethel 43 Meets Bethel 43, Order of Job's Daugh ters held its regular meeting Sat urday at the Masonic Temple. Visitors from Salem Chapter, OES were Mrs. Ortho Eckersley, worthy matron; Mrs. Harry Lucas, Junior past matron; Mrs. Carl Sny der, Mrs. Tillman Leasure. The girls voted to continue the coat-hanger drive. A splash party was planned for Feb. 28 between 7 and 8 p.m. A ski trip was arranged for Jan. 31, planning to take a bus to Hoo- Doo. s Glenda McCormick is the chairman. Every year the grand guardian has a Sunshine Fund. This money is used for something special for the grandparents at the Masonic Home at Forest Grove. The girls collected their dimes for this proj ect at the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. James Scott,. the present grandparents of the Beth el, submitted their resignation, due to ill health. The girls voted to keep the Scotts as past honorary grandparents. A special practice will be held Sunday, Feb. 1, at 1:30 for the officers. Initiation will be Feb. 5. Y-Teen, Tri-Y Mothers Meet The Y-Teen Tri-Y Mothers Club, will meet Thursday at 12:30 at the YWCA. After Mrs. Eldon Cone and her committee have served refresh ments and the business meeting is adjourned, a film on cancer will be shown. Mrs. J. H. Turnbuu, Marion County Director of the Cancer Society, will lead the dis cussion after showing the film. Mothers will bring clothes to the meeting for two German families. The clothes are being collected for the five teen-age boys, the three younger girls (3, 5, and 14 years) and the two sets of par ents which comprise the two refu gee families. Return From Cruise SILVERTON Mr. and Mrs. Rholin Cboley and Mrs. George Steelhammer are expected home Wednesday from a Caribbean air cruise on which they left Decem ber 29.
