Giving of the Ten Commandments to Moses and of the Holy Spirit to the early Christians are the reasons this week end is observed by both Jews and Christians as Pentecost. To the Jewish faith the time is known also as Shevuos, (Shalbouth) or the Feast of Weeks, be ginning Thursday at sundown and continuing until this evening. It commemorates Moses acceptance of the commandments from God on ML Sinai dur ing the Hebrew exodus from Egypt. Set seven weeks after Passover, it also is one of three harvest festivals. It was this festival which Christ's disciples and other early Christians were gathered to celebrate in Jerusalem, as described in the book of -Acts, when they were visited -by the Holy Spirit, the power given by God, as they were all together "with one accord." The day was, with Christmas and Easter, one of the major festivals of the early church. It closes the joyous 50-day period following Easter.
