-The St First Nazarene Will Note 40th Year on Sunday First Church of the Nazarene will celebrate its 40th anniversary In Salem Sunday. Five pnccial services have been planned, ac cording to the pastor, Rev. Eugene Stowe. At the Sunday school, former superintendents of the school will peak briefly. Dr. B. V. Seals, superintendent of the Washington-Pacific District of the church, will speak at the 10:50 a. m. worship service. Dr. Fletcher Galloway, pastor here from 1931 to 1934 and new pastor of Portland First Church, will speak at 3 p. m. Mrs. J. T. Little, wife of the first full-time pastor of the church, will be in troduced. A combined service of all the youth groups of the church at 6:30 p. m. will hear the Rev. W. D. McGraw Jr.. superintendent of the Oregon-Pacific District. Dr. Seals will bring the concluding sermon of the day at the 7:30 p. m. evange listic service. Special music throughout the day will be supplied by the Lacy Colored Gospel Singers of Pasa dena, Calif. Salem Church of the Nazarene was organized Mav 26. 1912. Its meeting place was the WCTU Hall at Commercial and Ferry Streets, now occupied by The Statesman circulation department. Fifteen members signed the charter and 25 attended the first Sunday school session. The first church building was erected at 19th and Breyman Streets. In 1931, the German Methodist Church at 13th and Cen ter Streets was purchased. It was remodeled and enlarged as the present home of the church. Mem bership is 407, with an average Sunday school attendance of 400. Church property, including the new educational unit, is evaluated at $135,000. Cornerstone Rite Sunday for New Willamina Church WILLAMINA Cornerstone for the new Emmanuel Lutheran Church will be laid at 3 p.m. Sun day. The stone is donated by Mr. and Mrs. Otto Heider Jr., of Sheridan. Participating in the service with the pastor, the Rev. Warren W. Pechman, and members of the church council will be Dr. Mark A. Getzendaner. who will deliver the address. Dr. Getzendaner, who has given many hours of service dur ing the early life of the church, is the former pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Salem and Is now executive secretary of the Pa cific Lutheran Seminary at Ber keley, Calif. Also participating will be the Rev. Walter J. Knutson, pastor of St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Portland. Leaders Named At First EUB At First Evangelical United Brethren Church., delegates to the missionary conv ention held at Jen nings Lodge last week will give a report as part of the evening service at 7:30 Sunday. Elected at the annual congrega tional meeting Wednesday evening were class leader. Frank Wedel; assistant class leader, Carl Wack erbarth; trustees, Walter Lamkin and John Behrens; Sunday school superintendent. L. C. Swink: as sistant superintendent, John Beh rens; secretary, Sabra Blanken ship; treasurer, Marie Mahood. Dr. C. P. Gates, conference su perintendent, will be present Wed nesday night to conduct the local conference, at which time lay delegates to the annual conference will be elected. TV - -tl3 j " ' . t 'jar' " - I ', G If Italian Church Trainer Slated Here Monday Salem Christian Business Men's Committee will sponsor the Rev. Anthony Caliandro, trainer of ministers in Italy, at a city-wide meeting Monday at 7:45 p.m. in Salem Academy gymnasium. Caliandro was born in Italy and educated there. He attended schools in New York and New Jer sey, and received his B. Sc. and M. A. degrees from New York University. His theological train ing was at the Biblical Seminary in New York City. In 1934 he received the Amer ican University Award of the Italian government for his pro ficiency in the field of Italian language, literature and cultural relations between Italians and Americans. For 12 years. Caliandro was di rector of Christ's Mission in New York City. He served on the fac ulty of the Senior High School in Montclair, N. J., as professor of Italian for 16 years. He taught Americanization and civics to Ita lian immigrants. Caliandro in 1947 was sent as an ambassador of good will by the Italian Ministerial Association of Greater New York City and by the American Committe for Evangel- j ical Relief to Italy. He is now ried i icating his full time and energy to seminary work in Italy at the j Evangelical Biblical Institute, Na ; pies. j Caliandro has contributed many ; articles to religious and education 1 al journals, such as World Out i look and United Evangelical Ac ' tion. Schulz. this week left the pastorate of Christ Lutheran Church to accept a pas torate in Connell. Wash. The Rev. Theodore Gebhard. pastor of First Lutheran Church, of Baker, Ore., has accepted the call to serve Christ Lutheran, and will arrive early in July. At a farewell dinner gifts were presented to the Schulz family by the congregation and its various organizations. Dr. S. C. McGraw the Eugene Stowe Pastor Store Opens on Trever, Authority O ii mme, uue in Oregon for Week Dr. John C. Trever, nationally known Bible authority and mem ber of the American Revision Committee of the Old Testament, will be in Oregon next week for a series of speaking engagements under the auspices of the Oregon Council of Churches. Dr. Trever .ill begin in Baker on Sunday and during the week will speak at Pendleton, La Grande, Portland. Eugene, Albany ar.d Corallis. In Portland, he will address a joint meeting of the Christian Education committees of the Portland and Oregon Coun cils of Churches Wednesday noon in the YMCA. and that evening will speak at a public meeting at the First Baptist Church, S.W. 11th and Taylor. Dr. Trever gained international fame as the man wr.o brought to light the Dead Sea manuscripts ci Isaiah and other Old Testament documents going back to 150 B.C. He will show pictures on his Bible discoveries. In connection with his message in each city. Dr. Trever will tell of the progress being made toward the comple tion of the American Revised Version of the entire Bible, which will appear next September 30. Grace Church Plans Rites, Group Outing Confirmation services will be held at Grace Lutheran Church next Sunday with seven young people making their vows before . the altar. In preparation for this service the group has been meeting week ly for the pat two years for in struction in the Christian faith.
