A Free Pattern of .i hands to printed In tho book. field aro now and in the future may be increasingly dependent; and WHEREAS instead of conserv ing our resources to the utmost the stark fact is that as a people we are guilty of scandalous waste of our national substance in our continued tolerance of preventable accidents; and the awfull toll of lives and maiming through the op eration of automobiles on our highways alone is a grave indict ment of our patriotic intent; and WHEREAS in a little while we shall be in the midst of a holiday season, which will be the occasion for more than ordinary heavy traffic on the streets and highways throughout the land, and while such season of the year should be a joyous one, it will be marred and saddened by useless loss and blighting of many precious lives if we do not recognize our obli gation to observe the highest de gree of sober care in our use of motor vehicles during that period; and WHEREAS laws and regulations in themselves, no matter how ef fective their enforcement, cannot adequately serve unless they are implemented by an aroused public consciousness, a recognition of the deep personal responsibility that rests upon each and every one of us: NOW, THEREFORE, T, AL LOUCKS, mayor of the City of Salem, do fervently appeal to all my fellow-citizens to throw off the tragic apathy which is costing us so dearly, and to take on in its stead a militant determination that avoidable accidents shall cease; each so to resolve firmly for himself and to demand of others during the forthcoming holiday season and throughout the New Year of 1952. She is Marguerite Higgins, able and courageous young foreign cor respondent for the New York Herald Tribune, whose coverage of the Korean war won her a Pulitzer Prize for distinguished re porting on international affairs in 1951. Since then the attractive "Maggie" has completed a series entitled "Around Russia's Cur tain," which took her on an ex tensive tour of Europe, the Near East and the Orient, has written the best-selling book, "War in Korea" and covered the United States on a lecture tour. Her most recent honor was the award of the "Poor Richard Citation of Merit" by Philadelphia's Poor Richard Club the first ever awarded to a woman. Miss Higgins was born in Hong Kong, daughter, of an Irish-American military man and his French wife. Educated in France and Eng land, she later attended the Uni versity of California, won her Master's degree in journalism at Columbia University and joined the Herald Tribune in 1942. The annual AP poll of women's editors specifies that selections be based on the news interest of the various personalities, and does not attempt to indicate any awards of merit. Others voted outstanding in their respective fields are: Sports Maureen Connolly, 16-year-old winner of the National Women's Tennis Championship. Literature Rachel Carson, au thor of the best-selling "The Sea Around Us." Public Affairs Anna Rosen berg, assistant Secretary of De fense. Radio Talullah Bankhead, star of NBC's ambitious "Big Show." Musie Dorothy K i r s t e n, opera and concert star, who played in MGM's "The Great Caruso" this year and has just given a command performance in London on the occasion of the wedding anniversary of Princess Elizabeth and Prince Philip. Theater " Judy Garland, who has made history this year by reviving the old two-a-day vaude ville on Broadway. Movies Judy Holliday, who won the Academy Award for her performance in "Born Yesterday " Education Margaret Clapp, president of Wellesley College, and winner of a 1948 Pulitzer Prize for her biography, "Forgotten First Citizen: John Bigelow."
